Nice car! I'd wet-sand it and buff the hell out of the dull parts. Bring it out to Englishtown in April [11th].

It's a 73 standard that I found over at my local mechanic's garage one day. Just under 79,000 original miles, one family has owned it, and its had the same mechanic for 20+ years.
spotco2 and ExtraNoise: Well my immediate plans are to clean her up as best I can this weekend to figure out where to start. Ultimately, I think the outside is going to look as stock as possible while the inside gets a refreshing. New carpet, seats/covers, headliner, visers, door panels, etc. I'm thinking a mixture of light and dark grey, or light grey and white highlights. Who knows.
Tyler C. - haha awesome, any pictures?
MAYHEM: exactly
jhicken: I'll definitely consider it! Any links for more details? _________________ '73 Standard

I think her name is right there on the back window - Widener. Use a German pronunciation - Veed-ner. |

I'm still not sure what the end name will be. I've convinced myself that I had this great name picked out for it when I was waiting to get the title transferred, but for the life of me I can't remember it.
Contenders:
[a] Shiny Sides

Trying to figure out which shade of yellow is the original...the bright or the dull?
I'm guessing the bright due to the dull overspray on the various engine components. |
I think the dull is original and they must've banged a fender or something, so they respray'd them and broke the pant at the drip rails. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Sometimes hard to tell. I have seen a repaint turn to dull crap after a few years while the original paint stays clear!

|
|
So this morning I've started my cleaning/inspection and took a few pictures to share.
http://picasaweb.google.com/111093806924991943464/BeetleInteriorPreCleanup?feat=directlink
As I was out there I had a few surprises.
1) In the rear-storage area behind the back seat there was a black box that took up the entire area...cables were running into it and I imagine this is probably a sub-woofer.
2) Underneath the rear seat there was an amp
3) The passenger door has a key broken off inside. This makes the door only lockable from the inside, once the door is shut. If you shut the door with the lock down, it becomes unlocked.
4) Coming up around the stick shift is a wire with a toggle switch on it. I have no idea what it is for, but I'll track it down. Any guesses?
5) The spot light under the dash meant to "...illuminate the heater levers..." doesn't work. When does this normally turn on? When the interiors/dash is lit?
6) The non-73 stereo doesn't turn on. Maybe there's a trick to it
7) Under the front storage mat, the black hose is cracked, coming out of the black box that it connects to are a bunch of twigs and dirt.
I'm charging up the handheld vac for the interior now (of course the battery was dead this morning).
Goals for the day:
1) Get the grunge and grime off of the vinyl/headliner/dash/seats/etc. Any tips?
2) Trace the secret switch
3) Fix the stereo...maybe with a secret switch
4) Free the broken off key
5) Fix the heat lever illuminating bulb
6) Go to the local classic diner and eat an Elvis burger (pb and bacon)
So what do you guys think? Make sure you click on the link to go to the album. Also, for future reference, what is preferred on the Samba...posting pictures in the thread, linking to an album, or linking to individual pics? _________________ '73 Standard

be careful with the strange black box behind the back seat. Could be some sort of nuclear powered time travel device that doesn't work properly, hence why 1/2 your car is shiny and the other dull.... _________________ Choptop 73 Super Build Thread

Air box drain hose. Still avail from most aircooled websites and perhaps even can still ordered from the local dealership. http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111819543
As for the illumination spot-light, could be the bulb is simply burned, dirty contacts or wire is loose. (dunno if it turns-on/off with the headlight switch or not.. as non of mine are hooked-up yet. Maybe someone will know how they operate).
*edit: Found this in the Technical Manuals Archive on how they operate..
