Well I am having my 84 GL repainted the original brown and tan, it only had some small surface rust in about 5 spots and it all was very solid no holes so there going to sandblast that and fill with duraglass my first quote was $ 2300 I said no and he came back with a 1300 offer does this seem too high? Does anyone know the paint codes for vanagons? |

I am far from an expert on the topic but I do know a little about getting your car painted.
First thing they consider is prep work. This is sanding, body fillings, removing or covering door handles, windows, mirrors and so on. Second major factor is, color. If you are changing the color then there are door jams and all the little places that need tending too so you vehicle doesn’t change color when the door it opened. Two tone is a little extra work rather than having on solid color over the entire thing.
The one thing that bothers me is they dropped their price by almost half? If he were a professional that knows his business then he should have been able to give you a good estimate the first time and left little room for haggling. Never the less, if I could get my van painted its original tan and beige for $1300 and have it come out looking good and not a bunch of runs and poor seams, I’d go for it.
Bottom line with me is I’d check out some of his work, visit his shop a few more times and see how some of his work comes out. Maybe check around and see if someone else has had work done there and if they are happy with it. Get the estimate in writing and detailing what body repairs he will do. Will he guarantee his work?
My $.02 on the subject. Good luck and I hope things work out. I toying with the idea of getting my 81 Vanagon Riviera re-painted, it’s beige on top and brown on bottom but have to spend the money on other things for now. |

Bobs body shop Lowell MI, I picked it up last night and they did an outstanding jobs I only found one flaw where the paint started to run but its very minor, I feel I received a vary fair deal. They even sprayed on some rocker guard. |

$1300 and your happy, now that's a deal. Got any pics yet? I think your paint scheme and mine are the same, if so, how about the paint codes? Did you get them or did they? Can you PM or Email them to me if so. I’ll be saving my pennies in hopes and putting fresh paint on my 81. Got to put new shocks, brakes, and exhaust then I can paint her. Helpfully be ready for camping next summer. |

It seems a little odd that he would quote you 2300, and then when you said no he dropped his price 1000. Seems a little shady, like he was trying to gouge you at first. I probably would have gone somewhere else, but I glad it turned out OK, would like to see some pics. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |
