Already sick of the antique hot rod look. _________________ "There was only one road back to L.A. US Interstate 15, just a flat-out high speed burn through Baker and Barstow and Berdoo. Or vice-versa.
Some of those donor cars are probably junk, and some of those early Ford parts aint cheap. |

I'm sorry people...but if you can't appreciate the work put into this VW hot rod...I don't know what's wrong with you.
This thing is freaking sweet. Would I do it to MY car...NO...but it is just another way to build a VW Bug. Personally...I think it's cool.

Werd.
I like it too. That particular car is an exception however. There is a difference between a well planned out rod, and some poser who jacks [edit] up a car and then calls it a rat rod simply because he doesn't have the time, skill, or money to do anything useful with it.
Just don't mention anything about those mythical blood-sucking psuedo-humanoid things that turn into bats and are allergic to garlic. Last time it got kind of uneasy up in here... |

That's my biggest beef with rat-rods; that some people don't put the time or effort into them to make them look as good as the above picture. _________________ --Jesse

I have a problem with calling that a rat. It's a nicely finished car. A rat to me is a dishoveled beater and it applies to any form of VW. It might be a reacher but it's still a beater. I'm hoping that a car was spared from the crusher or at least from rusting back into mother earth to build it. I would consider building one but it would be down the build list.
1. Cal-look rag top sedan
2. Pre 62 dual cab
3. Hot street Manx
4. Ghia rag
5. Volks-rod or Notch
6. Now I need to figure out how to pay for all of this!
Volks-rod is a better name. I know, it's been used before but it definetly fits here. The bottom line is that somebody put a lot of love and effort into their car. It adds another nice piece to the Volkswagen community. _________________ "It'd just be a whole lot cooler if ya did."

Yeah I thought a rat rod only applied to a car that wasn't painted or exactly complete. I saw some show about the guy that started the rat rod thing. Actually a Hot Rod magazine writer made it up I believe. _________________ "There was only one road back to L.A. I agree...these cars are NOT "rat rods", and the owners/builders of these examples do NOT call them "rat rods" either.
These would be very fine examples of "Volks-Rods".
Rat Rod is a low budget project that is purely built to function. It has anything not necessary chopped off or removed...including a solid floor pan! I've seen "rat rods" at shows that I could NEVER imagine driving anywhere. Some are just nutz! _________________ HAC - Houston Air Coolers

Comming from a traditional Hot Rod background, I can tell you this. "Rat Rod" has come to be a derogitory term for traditional Hot Rodders. Just because it doesn't have paint, and runs wide whites doesn't mean it is any less of a car, or have any less work put into it than a shiney billetmobile. "Rat Rod" is a term that is most often used by posers who are into the "scene" more than the cars. The kind of people who want you to think they are a hardcore hotrodder. Guys with huge cuffs, and greased hair, but no car. The "image"greaser, not the true Hot Rodder.

Did anyone see the episode of "Rides" on discovery channel were the feature was ratrods?
Most of the guy said exactly what you said Bugman. They dont like the term ratrod. They prefer hotrod. |

'Cause it's cooler than hell! Frank Hidalgo is a freakin' genius. I worship Frank's 64 (black, 6" chop, looks as though drove straight outta hell). If I had any testakittles I'd build one myself. My wife's gottem in her purse though. Noah and his brothers (socallook.com) build super nice stuff also. |
