Where is Kombisutra's contribution to this thread since he was the instigator in the first place? I thought he'd at least bid the DD a final farewell as it starts its journey to a warmer life down south.

This was his last post. At almost a week ago, I'd say he is doing exactly that too...

I know what he's going through, the only reason that I am on here as much as I am now is that I have the time... he does not; this place will suck you up. Mark my word, when he does chime in... if he is doing what we suspect, he will back me up on this. 'Cause I've done it, (not with airplanes though).

Do your thing Kombi.... Wink

So you're thinking, "The rim is totaled". Actually -stop interupting me- after about two miles, I had to stop and see what was going on with the wheel, and I was freaked to find the '58 decklid with my registration had fallen off!!! Eeek! I decided to run back and find it as opposed to drive on the flat. Wow, it was way the hell back there too... right in the center of the road, and fortunately not run-over yet.

well, thats 1 less part i need now Razz

Sorry Mr. May, I was enormously proud of Bob for taking on this project, in that it was an over-the-top monster to tackle, so proud of him that I opted to award him my hard-earned one-year 58 decklid, with the special condition that if he lost faith and sold the bus, he'd give me the decklid back. I had hunted for that elusive decklid on a sheep farm -knowing it was some where out there- for easily 8 years, and when I discovered Bob had indeed lost faith in the bus, I contacted him and he honored my request. Forgive that I had to do this. The decklid -as you might imagine having gone though this somewhat interesting evolution- is one of my more treasured things, and giving it to Bob was a testament of my respect in him for taking on the large project of saving this good old panel.

And, while I cannot give you this exact decklid Mr. May, I WILL, bring and GIVE to you this weekend, another Dove Blue decklid that is restorable and hopefully will help complete the circle a little bit. I'll look for you at the campout. Thank you Bill for taking the torch here, we'll all look forward to your progress. Semper Fi!

Wow... nice being back on thesamba! I missed all of you guys! We'll see you all at OCTO!

i got more than my moneys worth.
i asked if he had one i could buy. i can't find the M spring and don't know if Jon has another one.
so far 3 people have come to my house and seen it. i have been gathering parts for it since i bought it and buy NOS when i can. i have stuff to trade if anyone can help. i need a front bench seat as there is none. it was original dove blue. then white. then dove blue . then painted green. i have stripped some of the paint off to see colors and find right front cargo is sealing wax red, rear one is dove blue on left is white-both. it has a dove blue apron that is non hand crank and has cut outs for beetle muffler.
the shifter i have removed and rebuilt using a NOS housing. but i since found my shifter lock so i may install that.
i have some welding to do on roof as i want it on for good. i have to make a piece that is missing just below roof gutter inside ,but luckily it is flat stock and i have some 59 dove blue metal to make a new piece.

it is a quilt but it is my quilt and i will build it nice. my 65 i camp in now was bought for $25 and an hour after i bought 2 friends stopped by and told me to cut it up.
since then i have put over 27,000 miles on it and improve it as i can. maybe i should call this thread or another "58 DD Panel Quilt"??? Very Happy

it is not for sale -you must find your own. Wink

Thank you for the thoughts on passing the exam... I can't tell you how good it feels to get that 13 year old monkey off my back... legitimate mantanece shops actually hurl rotten vegetibles at you if you attempt to even approach thieir hangers with out an A&P... of course, since I've been hungry a lot through out this time, I found taking advantage of the situation for a ripe meal kind of useful... Wink

Sorry to hear of the wife's injury, that could be a real bummer if it doesn't heal up right, understand nixing the camping and will see you @ OCTO. Now in San Francisco and driving south. Likely staying in Santa Cruz this evening. I still need to find out where the hell the damn camp is this year... I really don't care right now... just amazed at the freedom I'm enjoying... So blinking happy that thing is over.

I'm affectionately re-nameing the bus: The Pussy Magnet Laughing

I'd like to invite you and the bus back up for a "homecoming" when the day comes Bill. I'd take you back into the hills and you could meet Mr. Buchannan, camp at the VERY spot the bus sat for so many years, and if you're into it, roll the entire "Drive Out" route with me to Willits. Notice Guallala down at the lower left, that's about the halfway point, then a right turn at Manchester, get beer in Boonville, 253 to 101, 20 across the river, left at Anderson Valley, cross Tomkei creek 6 times and descend into Willits! Oh Yeah!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Was that decklid of any use? If it gets rejected, it could be cut up and donor sections used to fix others. Do you have any pictures Bill? Thanks for keeping the fire under her, she says the heat is very welcome Very Happy

Would love to have some kind of update on the bus. How's the bus doing?

For more detail, this is where it sat for so many years (I'd have added the image, but I'm not that savvy):
