Alright.
So here is my latest and greatest. Im only 17 and i already have an addiction to these darn vws...
Im not sure if youve seen my other build around. I accually just am finishing it up. Anyways here is a link to that build page. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=419396&highlight=

I really wasnt a big fan of not having a roof on my yellow car so I had been looking around to see if i could find a good deal on a new shell. While in the search i came across a super beetle shell and pan that had already been cut in the rear for a baja. I jumped on the deal for $120. It came with all windows, doors, and rear arms. Orignially my plan was to just swap the body onto the standerd pan i have now after a nice coat of paint.
Well in the process i decided i will build this car bigger and better then my previous and then sell it for money for a tranny and motor.
The way i plan on getting away with making a super into a baja bug is by putting a full cage in it and set it up for a beam in the front.in order to get away from those damn struts.

So what ive got is a '74 super. and i long list of what i want to do.
Here is what ive got in mind. Let me know what you think.
1.Strip and paint both pan and Shell
(plan on painting the shell a nice gloss white)
2.Full cage, build the front out about 6inchs and set it up for a beam
3.3x3s in the rear with bi-passes
4.Coil-overs up front with 6" or 8" over beam.

The list goes on and on but this is the just of it.
Anyways here are some pictures!

Today i was able to get alot more work done on the car after i got out of school. I had an extra hand so we were able to get alot more than usual done. We started on the body work scince the pan is all painted and ready to go.
First we carefully took out all the windows starting with the rear quarter panels and working our way up to the Windshield. Luckily we too them all out with out any cracks or messups. I was very happy with that. When first figuring wether to try to save the seals or not I figured that id rather have to buy new seals then chancing on buying the windows. So all the seals are shot but it no biggie.
After popping out the windows we went ahead and removed the windshield wipers and the motor and anything else that was remaining such as the rubber seals for the doors and any other thing that wasn't sand able and paintable. So we just started doing body work and cleaning every thing we could out.

Anyways looking forward to another half day of work tomorrow on the bug.
Actually making some process. Surprising.
Pictures!

It's beat up but fixable. Should be able to fix it for less than a new one for sure.

IMO fiberglass work is the simplest body work you will ever do. Clean it, stick it, sand it, fill it, sand it, done! Very Happy Projects look great! You gotta lotta gumption for someone your age. Keep it up, we will be watching. (and drooling Wink )

If you do fix it take off the other blinker and fill in the hole under that. To me it looks like the blincker is what caused it to break to begin with

Finnaly got some more work done today. I wasnt feeling so good over the weekend so i didnt work on it at all. But after a day of school i worked on it this afternoon. Anyways straight to the pictures!

My friend let me borrow his grinder because mine broke a couple of weeks ago. So i used it for most of the work i needed to cut off and clean up.
First i cut off the remains of the front end off the super beetle.
This is what it looked like first.

Sure gave me a fight! but i finnaly managed to get it off.

After cutting that off i moved to start stripping the outside paint on the two quarter panels. And i stumbled across some nasty rust that i hadnt already seen. Right in the rear passenger side window seal. take a look.
Anyone know best way of fixing it? or does it just look like surface rust that i can sand down?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Anyways this is the next spot that im going to strip down, right under the dash. Its a mess.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also i was looking at the spot where the stock gas tank cap goes and was wondering what a good way to fill this spot would be.
Should i just pull it off and weld a little sheet over it? Or would it be easier and better to just bondo the cracks? I havnt bondoed before but im up for learning.
Here are some pictures of it.

The rust in the window channel doesn't look too bad. Just sand it and go from there, but from the pics it looks to be surface. As far as the gas door is concerned, you can just weld up the door or cut some sheet metal to fit and weld that in (just tack welds around the edges spacing them out and allowing cooling in between to prevent warping the panel). Just bondoing it in will not last at all. Looking like a pretty solid start though. Keep it up!

you need an impact screw driver. You hit it with a hammer and it presses down and turns at the same time. You can find them at kragens for like $15.

retty much any FLAPS has them instock (advance auto, auto zone, napa, etc.). I found a old never used impact kit once at an army base recycling center Shocked . pretty wild. I've used the hell out of it since then, lol. its the only tool i've found to get doors off, as well as the oil pressure piston caps.

get a torch, propane if that's all you can get, and heat up those door screws till they're nice and hot, then try to unscrew them.

I went ahead and got some work done today after all. I got some more primer so i was able to paint all the rest of the areas i had cleaned off the other day with the sander..
So straight to the pictures of the progress.

As you can see the intire thing isnt done yet.. here are some picture of the places i still need to clean before primering..

Also here is a list with some questions i was curious about.

Front end
6" over front beam. (planning on using stock arms for starters.)
thru rod
coil overs(not sure size yet)
6 point class 11 cage.(going to build off of it.)
bushings/spacers

Questions...

6" over or 8" over? Im going to run the stock arms for starters. but will eventually go to longer/wider ones. Also for rims im going to use the steel 5 spoke till i can afford better.

What rack and pinion should i go with? looking to not spend the most but not get some shit.

What tie rods?

What steering shaft should i get? Planning on quick release with the grant 3 spoke wheel.

Will i need a dampner?
planning on running 29" tires till can afford bigger.

What am i missing for the front end?

I plan on getting all of my stuff from pasific customs so if you could give me links thatll do me good.
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/

Thanks.

Been busy the last couple days.
Was able to prime a few more sections today. and i also finally got the doors off.
Took a good look at the one piece front.
I can see why it wont work on the super.
The hood top is alot farther back then the standered would be so it wont line up with the fender wells at all.
I have a number to someone that make kits for supers.
or ill see if i can just fiberglass mine to work.
starting to look into what i have to do for the paint.

If anyone has tips or good easy read links to painting thatd be great.
Thanks for reading.
