SteveManx2, , I have the same combination of short stroke with 140 heads and altenator and Holley 4bl. Not the largest displacement Corvair, but a smooth and cooler running engine, or so I've been told.

I'm not sure but the GS guy probably has the right idea for a reliable 250hp that can drive all day long.

i'm putting a edelbrock 4bbl equipped 140 series in my girl's 70 cabriolet and it is cammed for reverse rotation. even had the pulley and backwards stamped fan on the alternator to correct airflow and keep from tossing belts. came out of a rail buggy. IECO 4bbl kit and finned aluminum valve covers look nice, gonna freshen it up and hope to find more go-fast goodies under all the layers of paint and dirt. one thing someone forgot to do, was sell a crank with the timing marks on the other side of TDC for us VW guys!!! Very Happy

Degree marks or not, the 164 cu. in. Corvair needs to run a functioning harmonic balancer pulley. The current rebuilt ones are better than the originals.

Find/make a degree wheel sticker to fit it, but make sure TDC is really TDC.

That's correct, the link to the ebay auction I posted has Starr Cooke's contact details. He is the individual who has the Porsche 911 shrouds for the Corvair engine as well as a lot of other Corvair performance stuff. Again, Starr Cooke in El Cajon, California has the shrouds. Its near San Diego.

The stock Corvair fan belt changes direction (around the alternater and an idler pulley) to rotate the top mounted fan from the rear pulley. I think the Porsche style fan would solve the problem some Corvair engines have with fan belts not staying on their pulleys as intended. Plus it looks great!

Corvair fan belts should stay on just fine with proper belt and tension. Corvair fan belt throwing is fault of owners over tightening the belt. I have owned both stock and hopped up SCCA vairs. I have a built 140 with a hot cam and four primary carbs that revs up to 6,000 daily. Belt stays on. Trick is adjust it loose, should be able to turn alternator pulley with one finger when cold. USE a proper belt too! Clarks Corvair parts has em.

You will be much happier with a more stock four carb set up on the 140. The 4bbl set up eliminates carb sync but is starved for warm air. Rough running till they REALLY get warmed up.

Do you have the the secondary carbs with added idle circuits or the stock design.

Properly setup Webers will give you better performance throughout the entire powerband, better fuel economy and be just as dependable as a new Edelbrock carb. Not to mention they look SOOOO SWEET!
