I was waiting for a reply in the splitts thread but, I have to know now. On page 16 of the historic pictures at the barndoor.dk site there is a beetle parked off to the left hand side of the photo. The roof line and the back window look a little off. Since I have never seen a photo of a roll back roof in the 'up' position, I was wondering if maybe that was one of them. www.barndoor.dk Thanks. |

Taillights also look too high. It's a later model. Not a roll-up. Roll-ups aree huge, and go right to the rear window. There is a pic of one at strictlyvintagevw.com. Go to the "Hessisch oldendorf 2001". Somewhere in all those splits! _________________ CH³NO²

There is a butt load of pictures there and though I went through kind of fast, I didn't see one roll back split. Did you look at the shape of the rear window on that picture at barndoor.dk site? What shape is the rear window in a Tuscher, anyone? |

It was kinda off to the side. It wasn't the featured car. _________________ CH³NO²

Chad, I'd also say that the Beetle in the photo you mentioned is a '58 or later. The lic. plate light is not a split-window era "pope's nose", and the semaphore "filler" lights on the B-pillar were a popular accessory in the late '50's. Realize that if the last Barndoor bus was made in early '55, a '58 sedan (available late '57) would only make the barndoor a few years old.
BTW that car mostly hidden behind the bus is a BMW 501 (6-cyl). or 502 (8-cyl.) 4-door sedan from the early to mid '50's. Its headlights looked just like Beetles'. |

Ed Econmy's 1948 Tusher rollback now belongs to Ray Shubert in San Jose, CA That car seems to have travelled through the hands of some premier VW enthusiasts. It was first brought into the States by Jeff Walters in 1986 who sold it off to Bill Dierickx of Seattle, Washington (now Palm Springs, CA) Then it was sold to Ed Economy (Cerritos, CA) who basically restored it in the mid 90s. It was later sold to Ray Schubert in the late 90s (around '97-98?) for about $25k There are only 5 known to exist worldwide.
