If the autostick starter doesn't do it for you, try a new bosch SR15N with the small can. The reman ones from places like autozone have about half the power of a new one. I have had pretty descent luck with the reman SR17X (autostick) from O'Riely on VW's.

so is the SR15N a standard starter and the SR17X is a autostick? and the link you posted is the SR15N right? the one im getting is a PLATINUM brand starter. its a reman

Yup thats right. The reman bug starters are part number SR15N also, but the new ones use a small motor, just like the hi-torque ones. The one I have is acutally stronger than an IMI that I used to have. It will crank my 2332 with 12.6:1 compression with a lawnmower battery.

well she is alive again! we rolled it down the hill to get her started but its running like a champ! all the wiring and stuff is working great and looking good. when i first put this conversion together i thought i was running warm 200-220 degrees. i changed sending units and now the guage works right. im running 180 around town and 170 on the highway. that makes me feel much better. i ordered a auto stick starter from the parts store today. im going to see if it will work for this motor. it retails for 72 so i will get it for about 60 Very Happy i might as well give it a try before i spend $200 on a high torque one. if it doesnt work i can return it. i sent the wife into town with the gas cans so im going to go on a long ride later. Very Happy

Nice dog.

well i got the starter installed tuesday afternoon. i moved my ground wire straight to the starter bolt. it still isnt quite right. i think im going to put a bigger positive battery cable on it and instead of running it through the master kill switch i will just run it straight to the starter and then jump to my master kill switch from the starter. i drove it to work every day this week and its working great. i ditched the crappy ass empi side mirror and got a 6 in. convex impliment mirror. it works great. i mounted it twords the top of the windshield frame and i can see everything behind me and beside me. those empi mirrors should be banned! it never would stay in one spot no matter how tight you cranked it. im going to shoot it with a shot gun Twisted Evil i might take it down to randolph ORV park sunday. i dont have a skid plate yet so im just going to watch the other idiots tear their shit up. labor day weekend should bring all the hill billies out for a good time Laughing if my buddy zach wants to go we will drive the buggy down there. its about an hour drive south.

i think im going to ditch the front wheels for road use. im going to go out to the junk yard and get some drums off of a ball joint beetle. and the front wheels. i will cut the drum part off and use them as a hub so i can run some 4 lug wheels. one of my front wheels is slightly bent now so it shakes like crazy past 65. those old steel spindle mounts are hard to come by so im just going to mount my front sand tires on them and use them for the dunes Laughing i will have to get some conversion bearings but thats no big deal.

I have just seen this post, and I noticed that it included Ford 2.3 motors, so I have just read through the last 8 pages to catch-up, because I also own a 2.3 buggie, with a draw through turbo, which originated from a 1980 Mustang Pace Car.

I have a modified un-cracked head from an `88 T-Bird, which has been ported and polished by me, for alot of Extra power.... With a Roller Cam and rockers.

I am a die-hard 2.3T guy, originally from London, England, and have a modded FI version in my daily driver (Merkur XR4TI) and a carb version (for simplicity in the desert) in my buggie. But I now live here in LA, and Glamis is my Playground.

My tranny is a type 1 swing-arm and the previous owner told me that it had been rebuilt. My transmission guy confirmed that many quality components have been installed, however many of the clearances were out of spec hence it had an annoying noise / whine, so he went through it again and re-set it up with all the correct tolerances. I know that it has some quality components, including a super diff, extra thick double side plates, bearings, plus many more, and close ratio gearing that really matches the power band of my 2.3T motor. (I have all the documentation around here somewhere) My cable shifter is a PBS system, and shifts very positive every-time.

top is in fair condition. a few holes and my wife needs to stitch up a seem for a strap. there is no rust in this thing at all. has a iron duke 151 4 banger. motor is supposed to have about 2000 miles on rebuild. 4wd works great. and everything is nice and tight on it. only problem is it pops out of reverse so you have to hold the shifter. the wiring is not much to brag about and needs some attention. i will get that cleaned up and how i like it. we have put some miles on it this morning and its working good. it has power steering and power brakes. the heater blows HOT so im gonna leave the top off for as long as i can Twisted Evil i recomended this site to the guy that got the buggy so he might be floating around soon.

Good Luck to you with your new CJ-5! They're a blast no doubt, but I'm looking forward to my VW rail build because my jeep only gets about 10 miles to the gallon!

Here's my '76. I did a complete frame off restoration and an SOA conversion. 304 v8, dana 44's.
