Just broke 300 miles, took long enough! Wow! Just step on it! Freeks people out to see your van pull of the line quicker than them. I can't say enough, I-70 climb mid 60's up west, High 50's low 60's east up the eisenhower climb. Hit 85 on the flat outside Denver! Crazy fast in my baby but fun as shit! Exhaust sounds...... so nice! Its cold out, don't wait til spring, if you need or want a new engine, my feeling is you can't go wrong with a Tencent! Thanks again, Chris!!!

Glad to hear you guys are enjoying your new setups.

vwbeta, it's OK to raise the idle by opening the air bypass screw a bit, its the Allen screw on top of the TB just aft of the throttle shaft. 5mm allen hex wrench will fit, try a small turn counterclockwise, maybe 1/6 turn at a time, and drive it some to see if you like the idle better. But don't unscrew it so far that the o-ring around the screw head is coming out of the TB.

Onward!

It would be great if you could update with some mileage reports of real world driving. Thanks

well the biggest 'problem' is that i can accelerate now, so I do. And i drive faster than i did before the engine upgrade up hills..and i guess that isn't very good for mileage Wink

that being say - i can share some results that i think are 'valid'.

87 Westfalia, Auto trans, Vanistan 2.2, exhaust, throttle body etc.

Loaded for camping, 3 people = 470 lbs, full fridge, full cooler, camping supplies etc,4 bundles of firewood additional 500 lbs? freeway driving with some hills 17 MPG

Return freeway driving FROM camping, same people, empty cooler, no firewood, down from mountain and flats [gassed up before climbing up pass back home] - 21 MPG

City Driving - stop and go [Los Angeles rush hour traffic], +neighborhood driving, fast accelerating, almost zero freeway/highway driving - 13.5 MPG

I think if i wasn't a leadfoot this past tank that i would be more like 15MPG.

BEFORE THE ENGINE UPGRADE - 13.2-15.9 was my range. i never saw 17 MPG on the freeway, let alone 21! as noted some of that was downhill wihtout corresponding real uphill, but still..

I know my mileage actually improved slightly over my previous engine, but i believe the previous engine/exhaust was running below spec. I was convinced i was slower in my 87 than my earlier watercooled 81, for example. of course, YMMV. [couldnt resist] Smile

I'll update more in the coming months as my driving settles down and i stop trying to race cayennes..

cb

Yup, that's the problem I warn about in my ad. But your mileage sounds pretty good on the whole nonetheless.
