Re-wiring a tdi westy . It had the potentiometer mounted under the van hooked up to the throttle cable . I want to run a stock vw pedal ( mk3/4/5). The wiring is mk3 (98 tdi ahu) . I'd like to use a mk5 pedal because they are floor hinged ,(gives that van feel) . It's a six pin connector so I'm sure I can make it work . Anyone ever try it with a mk5 pedal ?

One of the cool options I've heard about is to use the potentiometer from a Mercedes w124/w210 which is cable operated. This puts the unit in the engine compartment and allows you to use the stock van throttle pedal and cable from front to back.

That's sort of what he had with a mk3 potentiometer . The owner has had issues in the past with it . I'd like to eliminate that style unit .

Never tried a MK5 pedal but the MK4 pedal works perfectly. I used extra long bolts with 4 nuts so I could adjust it where I wanted it. Took less than an hour to install

Why don't you like the pedal to stock cable setup? I always liked option that best as an observer.

I'm basing my opinion on my client's experience with that set up . I've done fly by wire pedals in corrados and b3passats and had no issues. Also to me it seems like one other potential trouble area. , so eliminate the cable . I'll price out a mk5 pedal on Monday and check diagrams .

Here's the pedal bracket that I install with my conversions. You need to trim off about an inch of the pedal. It bolts up to the stock holes that are left when you remove the factory pedal.

Yep, mk4. It's a direct bolt in. Gives me 100% throttle travel in vagcom.

The Golf and Jetta pedals are slightly different, but mount the same. There is also an early mk4 pedal and a late. They both work with this mount.

That is very slick Eric! Bravo Applause

I have been modifying the stock Mk4 pedal cluster bracket to work and trimming the pedal, but your requires no drilling and it covers up the holes from the old pedal that's the way to do it! Smile

I tell you I sure love drive-by-wire!

Sorry for the dopey question, but is this MK4 pedal diesel only, or do some gasser MK4's use it as well? Just prepping for my next Pick and Pull shopping list. Thanks Joel

I like the bracket. I welded a bracket to the front firewall and it held the pedal in the same orientation. I found it extremely uncomfortable on extended drives when I could not use the cruies. I even had a small block of wood for my heel. It is designed for your heel to be on the floor.

On revision two, I cut the OE pedal off of the TDI pedal and left the arm. I filled the side webs with JB weld and attached some teflon rubbing tape. I then cut the back side of the Vanagon pedal flush, filled it with JB weld and added the same teflon tape. Cabinet makers use it. Anyhow, it is about perfect now. Here is a picture, I imagine after seeing the mounting bracket above, you could use a combination of it and the vanagon pedal. mark

Vanagon without botton hinge gas pedal is sacrilege Wink

Very nice part though Eric.

On that mkiv pedal are you running mk3 or 4 tdi wiring . Ahu or alh? The mkv does run a six pin connector identical to mkiv version . When I spoke to vw about mkv pedals there's lots of options . Which creates grey area . I like the last version most . Floor hinged keeps with the "feel" of a van .

Don't know who your question was directed to. My engine was from a 98 New Beetle. That year, VW had a two part accel pedal. I wanted the all in one for the vanagon and purchased a pedal for a 99 New Beetle, where the change was made in production to the all in one. A word of caution, there is a subtle difference in the wiring for the two pedals. Two wires need to be reversed to work with the all in one pedal vs the early one. If you get it wrong, the engine will not accelerate. You also need to keep the pedal "bone" dry.

I don't know MK? from anything. Can't help there. I took another picture, so it is a little clearer how I modified the TDI all in one pedal to work with the Vanagon pedal. I probably could have removed a little more. The vanagon pedal stands a little tall at idle. I also looked at removing the TDI pedal and using a bracket with an adjustable heim rod and making a Vanagon pedal out of aluminum, but I think what I did was twice as easy and looks stock. I do believe you could do this and use the bracket above. It is a very clever design. Wish I had thought of it. Welding brackets is more permanent and does impact the sheetmetal and paint in the area welded.

I think Joel's question, (and I have the same question) was:

Are these newer pedals you guys used out of a TDi vehicle, or can the pedal donor be a gasser?

My pedal is a TDI pedal. I can't comment on whether the gasser flybywire would work. I'd have to look at the wiring diagrams at a minimum. There are two wires that need to be swapped using the early and later TDI pedal as well.
