I PLAN TO UPDATE THIS THREAD/ CHANGE ITS TITLE AS I RESTORE (POOR MAN STYLE) MY NEW RIDE - don't want to clutter up the forum...
I just bought this 3 days ago, and have already taken three 2 hour trips with no problems. I think I got a killer deal... She's not exactly perfect, but the bones are there. Cabinets are gone, but water tank, etc. are there. I cant wait to rip into this interior!!! I thought it was a Riv, But i've already been corrected. You all are a serious source of knowledge!!!
What do you guys think!?!?

That's no Rivi, that's a Sportsmobile. I've got a '73, yours looks to be '74 or newer, the laters bays are not as common as the earlier ones. _________________ Dirk

| thanks for the info!! any more you have would be great, I'm always willing to learn... i was going to ask if it was a Riv, but didnt want to seem too naive on my first post, good thing i avoided that... All I knew was that the guy I bought it from said it was a Westy, i knew he was dead wrong there, but then again, since he was only asking 2k, i already knew he didnt know what he had... |

| Nice find. I kind of like the 'spilled paint' covers but I think they need more dye spilled on them, too much white. |

I think it looks beautiful! If the underneath looks as good as the outside, 2k is an absolute steal on that bus.
I didn't read that you had changed your fuel lines. Please change all the rubber fuel lines on the bus if you haven't already. Read the Fire sticky here for inspiration.
The interior is not complete, but what is there is nice. A really good place to start from! I agree with Stuco that there is a bit too much white on those cushions. Post some pictures when you start to rework the interior!
Great looking bus, roll that baby! _________________ DJ

No I haven't even looked at the fuel lines... I was just to excited to hit the road! But after reading all those horror stories, guess what I'm going to go inspect this morning.
The bottom side is pretty great actually, how or why I dont know. There is the obvious expected surface rust everywhere, and the front wheelwells are both rusted through, but those are an easy enough fix. The PO smeared those holes with tar, guess he was more concerned with not getting his carpet remnant wet than he was with cancer eating his ride... Other than that, totally solid.
The PO told me his wife made the curtains, and his 10 yr old daughter did the seats, i agree, kind of a neat concept, but not the best execution, dang kids... I am thinking about simply doing the cushions in black leather (becuase I have a bolt sitting around already...) unless some of you vets tell me this would be an absolute crime or something. Then a small cabinet here, a cabinet for the fridge (which was included) there, some flooring, some wall coverings, etc., and this interior is going to be sweet!!! |

Not to sound too strident, but an inspection is not enough. simply replace them. All. Then inspect them next year. If the PO was more worried about his carpet than the rust in his bus, I guarantee he has not changed those fuel lines recently. And even if they "look good", you have no real clue to their condition.
I had a fire in my '68 and was lucky enough to catch it before it burned the whole bus up. Don't want to have to test that luck again. _________________ DJ

| After looking today - they are indeed the better fuel injection lines that LOOK to be newer, but you're right drober, I definately dont know that they ARE newer... I suppose I'll make those a priority over ripping my floor out! |

I love the color on that bus, and the wood panels on the inside, and the curtains. really badass. the peacefrogs tire cover though....I would poop in it and set it on fire.

Good to see another fellow Iowan owning one. But let's get those fuel lines replaced ASAP! Replacing them is a simPle task for the most part, give you as the owner piece of mind, and ensures the safety of you and most importantly others. Don't be a statistic! what part of Iowa are you in? I live over here in the QuadCities. Willing to come help you on those lines if within reasonable distance. _________________ 1979 Westfalia Deluxe http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=474334&highlight=iowa |

I'm in North Central Iowa, a solid 4 hours from you, but I do go to DM a lot... Maybe i should make a trip over to the QC and you can school me on a thing or two - Lord knows we are a rare breed around here... |

I'm still learning things myself! Reading and researching Samba and most importantly having a Bentley Manual!!! I make it up to Waterloo fairly regularly so maybe we can get together. If I were you right now, I'd do some research, buy the "book", and attack those lines before any trip anywhere. I'll p.m. You my info... _________________ 1979 Westfalia Deluxe http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=474334&highlight=iowa |

| Did he tell you anything about the paint job? It looks to be satin. I can see they got some paint on the rubber but overall it looks really good. |

Its definately a weekend special paintjob, done himself, just so it would "look good in pictures to make it sell quicker." (looks great in pictures, good from a distance, and not so stellar up close). It will definately be redone at some point, but looks good enough to fool non carshow types for now, so not my first priority i suppose... |

Well, it looks like he did a pretty good job at least. What were the original colors? |
