Now you've done it! You posted a picture of your fuel filter! Be prepared.
It looks like you're on the right track with the hitch, tho there are not enough pictures to be sure.
Really nice bus! _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

I know, the fuel filter is getting moved later this afternoon along with a bunch of fuel line. The hitch is bolted through the underside of the bumper in two spots then on the frame in two spots. It isn't welded to the bumper, just bolted. _________________ '67 Squareback

It sounds like you could pull them as one by removing the 4 bumper bracket bolts (up into frame) and the 4 hitch bolts. If you have splash pans at the bumper ends, remove the small bolts into the body. _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

I'm going to start refurbing my wheels this afternoon. Two questions:
1. is aircraft grade paint stripper safe to use on the chrome hubcaps? there is a ton of paint on top of the chrome that i would like to strip so i can polish the chrome. i just want to make sure the stripper wouldn't harm the chrome.
2. what is a close to factory krylon/rustoleum color for the stock white on my 68 to use on the wheels? i'm eventually going to get stock 14s and have them powdercoated, so i'm going to paint my 15s in the meantime since i can't stand the bus having red wheels. _________________ '67 Squareback

made some progress this weekend on the bus. Removed the rear luggage rack and cleaned the roof underneath. Replaced some missing screws and installed the busdepot luggage rack trim to match the pop-top seal.
I also installed a new engine seal and worked on removing the tow hitch. Unfortunately, the tow hitch bolts seem to be broken. they are spinning freely and it looks like nuts were welded inside the frame rail and can't be accessed to get a wrench on them to remove them.
at this point, it seems like my only option is to have the bolt heads cut off.
the bumper shell is off along with the bumper bracket on the driver's side. the passenger side bracket has some rebar welded on top of the bracket, preventing me from lifting it up and over the tow hitch. what are my other options at this point?

Those holes are indeed threaded, I'm surprised that bolt just spins. It could be the weld broke, or the bolt is too small and has a nut.
Do you have access to a cut off wheel?
I think getting that hitch off is your next step.
As to your other question, I don't know if stripper will effect chrome, but I'd be hesitant to try. _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

I didn't end up stripping the hubcaps, I'm just going to find another set. The hitch bolts just spin and I'm not able to pull them out - I can feel a nut on the other end but there's no access point to get to where they're bolted. Looks like I'm going to have to cut the heads off, right? Once I do that I'll be able to drop the hitch but the bolts will still be stuck in the frame, right? _________________ '67 Squareback

That looks like the correct dome light, I've got the same one, plate and all in my headliner.
Cut the bolts off and don't worry about it for now. Hopefully they are just bolts and nuts, and the original nuts are still welded to the frame. _________________ 69 Westy |

Awesome, thank you. The plate is pop-riveted into the original headliner, I'll drill out the rivets and attach it to my new headliner once it's stained.
I'm taking the bus to a local muffler shop after work to have them torch the bolt heads off. _________________ '67 Squareback

Yes, cut the bolts and push them into the frame. No problem. _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

Awesome, thanks. Does anyone know of a store-brand spray paint that is close to the factory color for the bumpers? I figure while my rear bumper is off i might as well give it a quick paint job so it doesn't look as bad. _________________ '67 Squareback

You might try some Easy Off oven cleaner to remove some of that p.o. paint on them first. Do both bumpers and the wheels and that bus could look very original/cool.
Come to think of it, oven cleaner won't hurt the hub caps (oven racks are chrome right?).
Otherwise, most any bright white spray paint like rustoleum should look pretty close. _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

i researched here on the samba and came up with duplicolor wimbledon white on the rims and krylon dover white on the bumpers. if i remember correctly, the split bus guys used these colors. i know our bays are a different factory color (cloud white vs silver white vs lotus white etc) maybe someone else can chime in?!?
the wimbledon is more of a "off" white then the krylon dover white.
sorry, no pic of the stock rims with painted bumpers...

Awesome, thanks a bunch. this is going to be a weekend project for sure. The bumpers are pretty haggard at the moment, but they're not too dented so I'm sure a fresh coat of paint will help a ton.
I went to the local muffler shop yesterday and they offered to torch the bolt heads off, so I'll be heading there Friday to get that taken care of. I'm off work all next week so I'm sure it will be a productive week. I have both front and rear headliner panels to stain and install, pop-top canvas and seals to install, all stationary window glass to go in, and wheels to sand and spray. Going to be a great week and the bus will be looking way better. _________________ '67 Squareback

Nice camper. I have a '68 as well, except white.
Mine has a hitch too, but it is very different. It doesn't attach to the bumpers at all afaik. It has it's own little frame that goes under the bumper and attaches to the frame.
I'll be watching your thread with interest. _________________ ~Kevin

Nothing is gonna happen on my thread for another year. Revenue is going to pick up towards the end of next year, then I will have the $$$ to start on mine. I'll be living vicariously through you and others until then _________________ ~Kevin

well not much has been happening lately on account of the holidays, but more parts have come in and I've gotten some things done here and there. I had the trailer hitch bolt heads cut off so i could remove it. i got some new blue basketweave seat covers and seat padding for the front seats for christmas, so those will be going on as soon as i get new seat stand mats.
i also got a buffer for christmas, and i've started working on the paint. so far it is shining up very well. I need to get some polishing bonnets and polish before i'm 100% done, but it should turn out great.
