What did you use to build the inner fender wells? Are they premade? |

Only the arch. The inside and outside walls were handmade.
Just so you know, they don't fit worth a damn without a crazy amount of cutting and filling. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

Almost to the front of the car! Finished the new battery tray, under the drivers side of the rear seat, along the door sills, and stripped/primed the drivers side up to the door jamb yesterday. Not a bad way to spend New Years if you ask me.
And yes, that's a skateboard with a battery on top of it holding the wheel up. Deal with it.
I also tore down the engine driven compressor, ordered a rebuild kit, and started to prep the body of it for some engine paint.
All new DOT approved fittings to do the final hose routing/bag install will be in Friday.
I'm hoping to have a fully welded chassis (sans final bodywork) by the end of next weekend. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

I have a feeling someone is going to snipe my idea before I get to run it in the car, but oh well.
This is how I'm running the engine driven compressor on the Square. Yes it fits in the engine bay, yes the cooling tin fits back on (with a hole for the EDC belt, of course), and yes the alternator clears the cover
According to my math on the pulley setup, I should be right in the optimum RPM range for the compressor when driving around town. Vid of it running and pumping air this Saturday. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

By the way, I'm not sure what you fellas have been doing with your alternator conversions, but why is everyone cutting brackets off their alts?
I'm running a completely unmodified Geo Metro alternator with no tin or fan shroud mods. What gives? _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

In theory this should put out 55 amps, if that's what you mean. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

Welp, due to a little mishap I had last Wednesday night I wasn't able to get as much done on the Square over the weekend as I'd wanted. Apparently a little spark sneaked its way under my safety glasses and stuck itself in my eye without me noticing. Thursday night I ended up going to the ER to have it pulled out, and Friday had to see my Optometrist to have him drill the rust out (yes, it's as much fun as it sounds). Unfortunately this is nothing new to me. According to the Doc's records, this was visit number six since '05.
By Saturday I was feeling well enough to drag the engine out of the basement and give it another run, this time with the EDC and alternator hooked up. I gave things a quick check with 11th Hour's resident engine whispered (Jason) before firing it back up, and much to our surprise, the valves were all way out of spec. I suppose that explains the noise from the first run. We also discovered a pretty significant intake leak on cylinders one and two, which we quickly fixed. Once we had things back in spec we fired her back up, did some rough carb synching and verified that the EDC and alternator were working as I had hoped.
Here's the result;

I'm much happier with how she sounds now. The alternator and EDC work better than I could have possibly hoped for. Clean charging at idle and no real draw on the engine when the clutch is engaged on the compressor. Can't ask for any more than that. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build

That compressor setup is about as good as you can get I think. Has me very very interested in doing something similar. I am also very interested in how it will affect the cooling of the car. |

The stock cover fits on still. I'm not going to do anything by the belt. There's hardly any open space for hot air to get drawn in anyways. _________________ '73 Squareback Bodydrop Build
