Okay, so I just finished another successful road trip in my 1974 super (650 miles to be exact). Everthing went wonderful except on the way home just after it got dark and I turned my lights on, the alternator light would slowly get brighter and brighter until it was on all the way, then mabey 10 minutes later it would go off. It only did this two times and the rest of the trip went great and the light hasn't gone on since. This alternator is only like one and half years old. The belt was tight. I tighted it up just before the trip. Is there any other reason why this light would go on and off like that? The alternator light always goes on faintly when I use my brakes or turn signal, but I didn't think that it was a big deal. I hope it isn't because the alternator is going bad again. If anyone has any experience with this situation and/or advice I'd love to hear it! Thanks everyone. |

Alt light doesn't glow on mine at all except for a minute during warmup. Don't know the cause of your problem, just wanted you to know that alt light coming on when you use the brakes etc. doesn't seem normal. |

Check all your connections you made when you installed the Alt.
Your original Alt had a external requlator under the rear seat.
Your replacement alternator is internaly regulated, and
when it was installed, required some rewiring per the installation
instructions that came with the Alt. So one of these wires/connections
could be developing resistance cousing a problem.
If you find nothing, Then>>>
The regulator is "solid state" and I wouldn't worry about it,
or try to fix it until it fails completely because I don't think
you'll find the problem untill then.
Sorry |

So basically if this problem doesn't happen again I don't have a problem, and if it does happen again it could most like be a bad connection or a bad alternator but I won't know until the alternator dies or I find the problem in a connection? The rewiring for the internal regulator was done before I ever had the car. Thanks for the advice. |

Like a60 says recheck the wiring job under the rear seat where the old regulator was... and the connections at the fuse box and headlight switch anywhere the big red power wires run too. |

Well I did check all the wiring under the rear seat. Before I had done that my battery had suddenly discharged in a matter of about 2 hour while parked. I check all connections and recharged the batter and haven't noticed any problems since. The Alternator light still hasn't popped on since my last trip so I hope we're still doing good. |
