This engine has been rumored for quite a few years now, but it is not expected until the mid-life facelift of the current 981 Boxster/Cayman which won't occur before 2016.

The current generation of direct injection turbocharged gas engines have almost unbelievable low-end torque and flexibility. The VW/Audi 2.0TSI can pick up speed uphill in 6th gear at 1400 rpms, yet it will happily run up to 6500 rpms without fading. I have no doubt this new 2.0 boxer Porsche mill will be the same way and it will have that smooth and alluring boxer sound that I like so much.

But the question is, will the latest Subaru 2.0 DI turbo boxer that just debuted in the 2014 Forester have the same running characteristics when channeled through a manual transmission? I think so and it will be a lot cheaper and less exclusive than the Porsche engine. Plus it's available right now. There is a certain coolness that goes with the idea of having a Porsche branded boxer in the back of your Vanagon, and I'm as vulnerable to it as anyone. But it's important to keep in mind that a direct injection turbo 2.0 boxer engine has just been put into production. But it wears the badge of that other brand. I can live with that. Wink

I work with primarily 3.6s and 3.8s now but a few older 3.2s as well.
The 3.2s sing some sweet music.
They are my favorite sound, but prefer to drive the 3.8 for obvious reasons.

There is a 2.7 that runs Vintages races around here that blows before every finish and flat out screams up until that point Laughing

Yeah, I owned a 1984 Carrera with a euro-spec 3.2. 10.5:1 CR and 231hp. It had a throaty throb that would frankly send your heart throbbing as you accelerated through the gears. It was notably stronger at 4000 rpms and above, but it was tractable even at low rpms.

I've always wanted one in a Vanagon even though the hp and torque numbers are nothing special anymore. I would even pay the typical $6000 price that they typically go for. But I always get scared off by the age of these engines and the high chance that you will be buying someone's problem engine.

Who knows? Maybe some day...

Right on DC.
I am very lucky to maintain a Syncro with a 3.2 in it.

The only downfall to using that engine, is the proper refresh with A+++ parts will cost huge dollars.

It gets driven about 1500 miles a year, so it should be good for some time.

Last I heard BenT has the last remaining unused MSDS kit for the 3.2 conversion into a Syncro.

yeah it's only an H6 but....looks good to me Very Happy

I'd like the Porsche engine in my doka but I already committed to the H6 with canbus. the little bugger has some pep if ya get on it.
I can't figure what anyone would do with more HP or torque but brag. way more than I need as it is.
this ghia is gonna fly when the tires aren't scrubbing the tread off on the pavement. Laughing

the 3.2L motor is very strong and will run 300k miles or more

every engine has a few weak points, and on the 3.2L it can be the rod bolts or head studs - fixes are available for both of those

if it has good compression/leakdown it will likely go a long way

I have a hot rodded version of a 3.2L in my 1973 911.

Yeah, I know that engine is known for extremely good durability - especially the pistons and cylinders. But I've looked at the high prices of rebuild parts and concluded that it's much better if you don't have to open up the engine.

It seems like you do see fairly low mileage (120K-150K) ones for sale on e Bay from allegedly reputable sellers. But an engine swap presents the worst kind of situation because the amount of time between buying an engine and finishing with all the fab work and getting it running can be quite long - long enough to be outside of the warranty/resolution period if the engine does turn out to be bad once you get it up and running.

If you really had shit loads of money and wanted to keep your air-cooled bus (or whatever) air-cooled, you could drop $130k into the newly re-developed and released Porsche 2.0 4-Cam 904 motor. see here:
http://www.capricorngroup.net/no_cache/en/automoti...ackPid]=13

The prettiest air cooled motor you will ever see! I love the dual distributors of those. My brother in law once owned (what many people believe to be a myth only) a 1966 Porsche 912 (hill climber?) with a 904 engine and the 906 trans. And this wasn't some back yard assembly. It was one of what I believe was 3 built at the Porsche race factory. 2 liter 4 cam motor with the 906 5 speed LSD! That thing would beat anything in its day racing the canyons in Southern Cal!
