Try protecting your bags by inserting something at either end. Find a plastic jug or soda bottle that's the right diameter and cut it down the right length.

There were some major differences in the two tents. Different stitchings, different straps, connections, bottom section around the base, stake loops, and other things.
Has anyone ever documented and differences. I took a few others pictures I might post later.

It's they way they are made diffrent sewing patrens if you look at them some have a flap on the front covering were the awnings starts another has extra screen hold downs then the diffrent colored vinyl gray, blue.
the tie down straps strings or straps ect.
The new one stan scored looks like the late style with out the flaps and snap ties instead of strings. Maybe the blue yellow and red blue are the last version is the last version.
I think the oldest one have the flaps and string ties and gray botom then they just started adding the updates extra hold downs, snap ties ect.
Maybe it,s time for a Tent book!

I'm thinking of setting up my blue/yellow Big Top this weekend for the first time at the WRW campout.

Just picked up our new to us "Big Top" tent today. Interesting variation in door/front flap color. Almost reminiscent of a German flag Very Happy .

Yes, there are a number of different variations. Possibly year to year, but also maybe from different vendors VW used to make the tents.
I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm too lazy to do the research since I just got back from a 3-day camping trip in the Sierra foothills.

so is there anyone reproducing tent stakes and the likes? I'm needing two sets now. They seem like they might be fairly easy for the right person to copy

Be sure to post pix when you get this tent set up. The colors look pretty unique so far.

here is one the seller took. It doesn't really do it much justice as the colors appear to be much more vibrant than in this pic. I'd like to set it up and leave it up long enough for the wrinkles to fall out, and it would be nice to stake it and set up all the flaps too. Just have to wait for the time to do it and the weather to line up.

It was advertised on this site as a bay window tent. It actually lasted on the Samba for more than 20 days before I even noticed it, but how many people look at bay tents for $650. No pictures either.

That's how I've found my second big-top as well. It was listed as a bay window but the pictures were of an early tent. Good score, it looks nice.

Looks like the unique tent shown above sold for $2500 with a buy-it-now on that big auction site.

This post is for a price reference only.

My 66 which isnt even a real westy came with a big top tent and I am fairly certain I have everything for it but I have some questions for the big top gurus.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Q1: Is the bag 2nd from the left the only non original bag in this pic? Or is it original?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Q2: What is original here? Im assuming the stake on the far right because it says made in germany but what about the shorter one next to it? How about the one on the far left?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Q3: These poles were left over after setting the tent up, what am I missing?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Q4: What does the smaller rail go to?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Thanks for the help, here are some cool pictures of the original tag on the pole bag

I don't claim to be a guru but will share what knowledge I have- the tent peg with the circular top is definately original (I have the same tent pegs for my earlier tent)- not sure if it is correct for that year or tent but defoo OG westfalia

that spare piece of rail attaches to the drip rain behind the roof rack leg (the rail was two piece to allow the roof rack to be installed (sorry cannot find a pic but it is pretty obvious the rationale when you see the roofrack installed)

My tent bag is yellow and made out of the same canvas as the tent. It does look like yours, so yours is probably original. The bag second from left is not original.
On the stakes, the first, fifth and sixth are original.
Here is a photo of the stakes and tie-down string thingies that came with mine from the original owner. You can see part of the tent stake and pole bags in one photo as well.

Good to know. I have a bunch of the stake with the loop on top but I dont know where they go? The original string latches onto the stakes with the lip very nicely but I have no idea what the other ones do. Also why are there two lengths of lipped stakes?

The four largest ones go through the rubber loops at the four corners, the six middle size ones go through the rubber loops between the corners, and the eleven or so smallest ones with the circular loops at the top are used for the guy strings to support the corner poles and to hold the flaps open--4 on each end of the tent and three to hold the large striped entry flap open as an awning.

The stamped sheetmetal ones are fragile. I don't know that I would use them. Get some throw-away ones at Walmart that won't give you a heart attack if you bend one hammering it in.

The rubber rings are also going to be fragile by now. Be gentle with them as the rubber will tear, having lost its elasticity over nearly 50 years.

Picked up another BigTop tent recently. Pretty complete which is nice. I was able to set it up and document everything this past weekend and match it up to my other one.
The stakes appear to have been replaced at some time as some say Made in Germany on them and others don't.
All poles, stakes, guy wires, stake bag, pole bag, and tent bag are there. Only thing missing is the tent to tent rail boot....oh well, can't win em all!! Smile

Ok, I'll refrain from the hoarder comments... Very Happy I'd love to score a Big Top for my 67 Westy...but to be honest it would be just to complete the package...I like camping out of the bay tent with a floor...Hey wait...am I Bay?!!? My bus is split! My Bus is a split!
