Looks good Vince. Wish I was there to see it in person. I can wait until October. I will have to find some more tail lights and get them chromed. Everyone likes them and they are getting harder to find. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

I have also found that most, if not all, fiberglass bodies are off a bit in proportion. So measuring can get you in trouble. I have found that measuring and then "eying" it makes for a better look. (at least for me) |
I would agree. We set the hood on Kermit this week and didnt like the way it was sitting, so we took the windshield off and tried setting it. It took some doing, but I agree with the measuring and "eying" it. It seemed to work out for us too!
Beautiful build. One really nice buggy!

Vince: Your latest buggy build is looking great - as usual! The bodywork & flake finish turned out fantastic - shame about the 'paint pops' - the painter's eye ALWAYS steers right towards the glitch -
I, too, like the idea of putting the project together to mock it up, then blow it apart & do the bodywork/paint/detail/wiring work upon reassembly. Und ich habe in der Regel empfohlen, keine Montage alles bis mindestens nach dem dritten oder vierten Tag ... (there, I fixed it via a poor translation)

Moon Buggy
Thanks!
I do find it easier. With a bad back leaning down is hard for long periods of time. With the body on the stand most everything is at a good height to work on. With the wiring I can get under the dash and work on things without laying on my back. Mind you I will still have to get under the dash to make some final connections but not as many and all the wires are the correct length.
Are you going to come to the MOTB 2013?
Big Mikey
Thanks for the kind words.
Are you the Mike on the Desterter forum asking about glassing over gel coat? If so this thread might help.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=515365&highlight=roys+manx
You can glass over properly prepped gel coat with good results.
Roy
Thanks and I am looking forward to seeing you here in about a month. My tail lights have started to rust on some spots that were missed in the chroming process, any problems with yours?
Marc
Thanks, no chroming here on the OBX. Closest is in Richmond VA.

Thanks! I have worked on 8-9 buggies and have found that most of the fenders are not symmetrical. Not just in angle, which can be caused by age and sitting in the sun for years, but in length. This is sometimes caused by tires "sanding" them but I have also found that some of the molded areas do not match side to side. It is a hand made thing so I know it will not be perfect. Kind of adds to the charm.
Bryan
You hit it on the head. Most people would not see it and then only if it is pointed out. But I know it would bother me and I would see it all the time. I paint it first so I can get the chance to scratch it later. Actually, with the metal flake it will make a kind of "ring" around any hole that you have before painting. Where the paint is a little thicker at the edge of the hole. Regular paint will not do that. One of the reasons I did the hole cutting after the painting.
Chris
Maybe Bryan can tell you what it says in person at the MOTB 2013, if he is able to make it.
By the way what are you bringing this year? You know I have room if you want to leave anything here on permanent loan.

My chrome is doing OK. I am sure if I was at the beach more, it would be a different story. I have removed the Crager S/S wheels that were popping the chrome off. I picked up some polished Centerlines for the rear with tires and a thin set for the front. The front ones are a little narrow for my liking and the rivets were hitting the calipers. I picked up some spacers but never used them and ordered some 6" Signature wheels from Winnie. My buggy and the wheels are at the shop getting worked on, new front tires, etc. If you know anyone that needs some 14" wheels and tires to get by or needs some chroming done, let me know. If I have the room for MOTB, I will bring them down. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

Vince: I'll agree that cutting holes after freshly refinishing a car is nerve-wracking. I had a 1969 Cal-Look Beetle back in '82 while in high school. I had finished a white Imron paint job on the car a week prior & successfully dealt with defeating some fisheye issues. I finally got a good paint finish laid down; then, a buddy was installing an antenna on car for me annndddd - he slipped with screwdriver & gouged the paint... %$&#(@*&!

Looking forward to seeing you and your Manx here!! I would love to see a build thread on it.
Roy
Mine were rusting in the box in my garage. I think they were plated a bit thin in those areas. I will just keep them waxed up good. Are you driving your vehicle here on the C2C trip?
Bryan
I have had some "OOPS" moments already but have been able to buff them out. Are you going to make it to the MOTB?
Joe
Thanks! Are you taking it to the wire again with your latest buggy?
Update 9/9
Made some progress over the last 4-5 days.
I still need to hook up the horn, install the interior, seat belts, polish up the rims, put the new tires on and some other small stuff.
I did have a set back when I broke the glass on the windshield. I had another one that I put in and will have the glass replaced on the broken one.

Yep. Would not have it any other way.

Wow - that looks really good!
I live near the beach so rust is always a concern. I found a product called 'Sharkhide' that protects chrome - even the cheap stuff, so that you won't have to worry about it anymore. It's expensive but worth it. It's about $60 per quart. _________________ (o\_i_/o) what you've just said ... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. Vince,
Your car looks simply amazing! I love the color. In the picture above, where did you get the tray that straddles the tunnel? I hope I can make it to MOTB to see it in person, cause I'm sure the paint looks even better live.
Thanks,

The buggy looks really good! You should be proud of your work!
Plans for me & MOTB are still in the air - I'll need to be here for Towd support 10/16-18 timeframe - may get a day at the coast - we'll see...

I think you are right. I tend to blame it on needing the money but I think I would keep them if I really liked them that much. (Monocoque. Lifeguard Manx) I, like you seem to always have another project waiting or can find one without much trouble. (they also seem to find me as well)
Rathbone
You did not kill the thread. I was trying to think of the best way to answer your question. I have used about 5-6 lbs on the body and panels, hood etc. The reason being that I am truly covering every millimeter with flake. Since the flake is .015 in size (basically the size of a pin head) it takes allot of flake and I am doubling, tripling up in just about all areas. When you mix it with the clear and shoot it you are in most cases using the base color as your "color". I am using the flake as the color. It has been a huge learning experience, and my next one will not use as much flake but will take about 5 lbs including what goes on the ground. As of now I have about 1 lb left from the 10 lbs I started with. As I said I have had some do overs and have covered my yard with flake. (garage, driveway, family, dog, cats) My first blue Manx used about 5oz to cover about the same amount of car. This was shoot in the clear and in some places I had as few as a dozen flakes per square inch. With the dry, full coverage method I have hundreds of flake per square inch if not more. This actually is much more like the way it would have been done in the mold using clear gel coat where the clear was shot into the mold then before it cured the flake was shot to cover all of the surface. Then a color was shot to cover any lightly flaked areas. That is why when you look at a gel coat metal flake job it looks rough. If you could see my Manx in person it definitely has that rough look to it because the flake is "piled" up. The thick, cut and buffed clear gives it that deep look that mimics the original gel coat.
Sorry for the delay in replying.
Rick
You hit it right on the head. Complete coverage takes allot of flake. And on the car too. |
Vince...
Just a quick question. My head is spinning at how good your results are.
You mentioned that you moved on to a dry method of spreading the flake. Are you still using a roller to flatten the flake on wet clear? (was that you doing that?) or are you using one of the flake guns to spread the flake?
I'm gonna go out on a limb an say that looks better than a gel coat original or any bass boat I've seen. |

This is by far my new favorite Manx. That colour looks amazing and I love that you followed through and flaked the inside of the tub and dash. It will be a while before my buggy is ready for paint but I am really hoping to be able to use metal flake on it when I get that far. When you have it out and running I would love to see more pictures. My computer can use a new background.
Amazing work. |
