Nice looking drop gate! Did you change your rear window out due to rust? Keep the pictures coming. Everyone loves to see in-work pics. Cool

Naw she was cut out to add a wider viewing area is my best guess. I wanted her back to stock after starring at it for a few months. I've been working on this for a year now and I'm just starting to put the pictures together. I'm going to post the bed section under the window repair next.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 05, 2014 11:23 am    Post subject: Indiana Jones and the Empty Rear Pedestal of Doom Reply with quote

So the seat story goes like this. The DC came complete with everything but front and rear seats. I knew they were a hard item to find I just didn't know that the rear seat was going to turn me into Indiana Jones and the Empty Rear Pedestal of Doom. I searched high I searched low, I went to every bug event in Southern California I could not find a blasted rear seat. Then I would see one on the Samba for a mere turn over of your retirement plan, your first born and a left testicle. I was bummed but not discouraged I knew that one would come. So finally I find the front seats by searching through the Samba for bus front 1/3 2/3 and finally found a set for a decent price. While reading in the forums I discover that a front bench seat from a single or double cab will fit. Shit, so now all I do is change my search criteria and presto there is a more reasonably priced single cab front bench seat. I bought the seat and bam in about a week the seat dilemma is over and I'm a happy dude, a lil poorer but happy.

So it was done the seats were found, VW order was restored and I went back to the college to teach archeology. I couldn't believe it they were mine, in fact I was so happy when they came I called my wife into the living room( her formal living space that isn't allowed to be touched) to watch me unveil the cardboard makeshift box that was wrapped around my springy upholstered grail. She saw the excitement in my eyes and at that moment shared in my joy until... I've seen my wife angry, disappointed, discouraged, hell I watched her give birth to my two kids but nothing could have prepared me for the mix of negative emotions that poured out of her when she saw what came out of that box. First she looked numb then I saw her head spin around as the rust, dirt, foam stuffing, and rat shit poured onto her formal living space floor. Lets just say my VW parts have been banished to my garage only and we aren't to speak about how cool a part is if it isn't shinny, got a fresh coat of paint or new in a box. So I got right to work and striped them down. For me it was a beautiful site to behold but seriously as I looked at them I said to myself "I paid what for that?" I was seeing my wives point for a split second then quickly went back to being in VW awe and I saw patina not rust. Very Happy

So this is the twist in the story. I was at the Pomona VW and Hot Rod car show when I saw a booth selling new aftermarket seat frames. The name of the company is Glide. I started shooting the BS with the guy and he was telling me about his seats and that he did mostly Ford and Chevy but he was always getting VW request and of corse I asked the same and told him about my DC. He said he would make VW seats if he had a the prototypes. I saw an opportunity so a few weeks later I stopped by his shop and I offered him the use of my new found seats. Well he said he needed the mounts and asked he he could use my bus for a few weeks and in return trade a set of shinny new seats. Well I'm in no hurry and I could sell one of the sets so I agreed and he sent a tow truck to pick up my DC.

The next day he calls and said he couldn't use my bus because it was too rare he wanted a standard split screen bus. I told him that my seats were one of the standard front seats in most split screens but he declined. No problem I asked instead of sending her home to me could you please send her to Kenny's Sandblasting so he did and offered to powder coat my old seats once they were done at Kenny's for the trouble. I thought that was an awesome jester and well here they are in all their glory. Long story but it shows how the barter system still works in our world and there are good people out there. If anyone has a spilt bus with seats and you want to barter with Jim at Glide in Rancho Cucamonga he's open to it and is still looking. Just sayin.

The lower section of the nose was hit and right above the lower front valance she was pitted pretty bad all the way across. Well I picked up a lower front nose section from Gerson and we went to work.

Cut it out but left the two outer upright sections in tact. Jesse said that we want to use a lil replacement metal as possible and when you have a factory bend like this and its in good shape we should leave it. If you look at the couple pictures closely you can see how we cut off the ends of the replacement piece to leave the original bend on both of outer upright edges.

It may look like allot of bond but its just a skim coat and most of it is sanded off. It's just enough to smooth out the wrinkles and dimples and give her that face lift she needs. The last few pics are with a metal treatment not a high build primer. I'll post pics of the final process of the nose job once I'm finished.

Damn! Kenny used some pretty coarse sand Shocked .

I think I just got it you meant those rocks laying on the drop gate? Those were in the gas tank. I was going to clean it out with acid and those rocks but didn't yet. Wouldn't be much bus left if he used that grit.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 05, 2014 10:58 pm    Post subject: Top of rear wall bed section Reply with quote

So the transition point where the window section and the top of the rear wall bed section meet needed to be replaced. It was cut strait across and I'm not sure if it was done to straiten it out remove the rear window section or to start the repair. All I know is that when the guy dropped off the window section he said he had that piece also and gave it to me. That was perfect and I was stoked.

Keep it going! I have some welding left in my DC, but since I know I will be replacing the parts, I plan on enjoying it until I have the time and space to cut out the inner and out dog legs.

I wish I would have just put her back to running and enjoyed her for a while before I broke her down. I know its going to be sweet when its done but its sucks to have to wait.

It's always worth the wait. The last 2 buses I've owned where solid enough to enjoy and then I broke them down. When I swapped my small nut for a big nut, I found my PS rear wheel well is hacked in bad. So I know that needs done. I want to replace the inside floors and dog legs. It was patch by the PO so... I'll drive it until I buy another house. Wink Cool

Don't forget that this is supposed to go on the rear of the back seat bottom. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but VW put it there for a reason.-

Nice. I have to dig up the pic of the egg laden bird nest I found in the roof above the driver side visor.

Thanks cru... what is it supposed to do? Added support to the rear of the rear seat frame? I think I can make this for sure. Is it really needed? I know the krusty kab doesn't have one.
