You just need to plug it so that stops behaving like a big contrabass flute!

I took a look at the bottom of my A pillars and it turns out both sides have a grey piece of rectangular foam that looks very stock blocking these openings. Maybe this is a factory upgrade in late Vanagons? Mine is a 1991.

Interesting! It makes sense but we need some more data points to compare.

Yeah, I would be very surprised if any of the two previous owners of my van added this foam. None of them ladies were involved too much in van upgrades based on what I know of them. The foam has clean cut lines like they were just made for this purpose.

Would love a picture, perhaps even with the foam removed too? Maybe something cheap to sell to folks from one of the vendors

So that explains how the mice have gotten in my van in years past. Do you have a picture of the foam?

Does that allow ingress to the van (via the A-pillar)? I'm guessing the mice came in from your front-grill, into the airbox, and out through your vents. There is a factory plastic mesh across the air-inlet, but it does *not* fit properly, and there is plenty of room there for a rodent invasion.

I don't think that mice are getting in that way - the open tube just transmits a lot of road and wind noise up to ear level.

I'll have to check the screen, but I just had the grille off a few weeks ago while applying sound deadener to the front, and drilling out the heater box bolt that I broke, and I didn't notice the screen being too ill fitting.
Once, I saw a mouse jump up the wheel, then onto the suspension, and then it disappeared. I could then hear it in the dash area. This was in Canyon Lands, and I walked up the the van after camping for a few days, so I figured it had just started to build a nest in the dash area. The only place I could imagine it getting in back then (early 90's), on the ground in the parking area, was that hole. Never pursued it, but did get another mouse a few years later, and assumed it got in the same way.
Since I've been working on quieting the front of the van, I will definitely plug, or baffle, that hole.
Question: If not that hole, or the little air vent area, is there any other way a mouse could get in?

I found the same thing. It looks like an old kitchen sponge. Probably due for a replacement.

Yes, it does look like a kitchen sponge. Mine seem to be in good shape so I will leave them in peace. I tried pulling them out but I fear I will tear them apart unless I take out the front spoiler (air damn). They are just a simple piece of foam, your pool noodle will do go here, no need to call vendors to reproduce this part.
