I was speaking with my mechanic the other day and he said that if I wanted a real electronic ignition for my '71 Bus I should find an aircooled Vanagon and get the parts from that. He said the Compufire and the like are okay but not OEM quality.
Has anyone here done this? I am using a stock, vacuum advance distributor, etc. What parts would I need from a Vanagon?
Thanks. |

It would have to come from a 79 Calif version bus or a 80-83 Calif version Vanagon.
Key word is California version.
But, I would NOT put this set-up on a type1 engine. Way TOO much advance. You are in the area of 38 to 43 total degrees.
Bus Calif 1979 * 2000
Distributor: VW 039-905-205C, Bosch 0237 022 009
Can Use: (Same as Vanagon Calif 80-83 Air Cooled - See Below)
Dist Hall Sender w/Parts: Bosch: 1237 011 050
Ignition Control Module (On Left Firewall): Bosch 0227 100 137
Coil: 00 041
Vacuum Can: 07 163
Spark Plug: W8CC
Timing Set At:: 5deg ATDC @ 800-950 rpm (Manual Trans), @ 850-1000 rpm (Auto Trans) w/strobe, vacuum hose(s) connected
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 11-13deg Adv @ 9.4 In. Hg, 11-13deg Ret @ 9.4 In. Hg; Centrifugal: 9-13deg @ 1600 rpm, 12-16deg @ 2800 rpm, 21-25deg @ 3600 rpm
I use this set-up on all my 2.0L buses. It is a drop-in swap. But, finding good harness's between the module and the dist is getting tough. I have around 15 distributors but no harness's.....
If you or anyone want more info on this set-up, pmail me at [email protected]
I have been doing this for over 5 years. |

I've used compufire for 7-8 years and am quite pleased with them. The later distributors are incompatible with your 1600 typ 1 engine. That mechanic should know better. The compufires are available for both vac advance and the 009's. |
