I'm upgrading the AC on my '84 Vanagon to a '90 AC unit and looking at the changes to the radiator fan and seeing two different types. Obviously, w/AC and w/o AC.
I am curious if the Fan Shroud has changed from 1984 style to what is used on the 1990 Vanagon.
Does the Syncro use the same fan shroud?
Thanks

When I had my 84's A/C rebuilt by a competent shop they (among other things) went with the later 3-speed fan and shroud). They counseled that this was worth doing for better cooling.

Oh yeah, need the 3 speed fan, but is the shroud the same for the 3 speed fan?

No, the AC fan is larger in diameter and the AC fan shroud is needed for that fan.
Any late model, AC equipped parts van will have the needed shroud.
I have them, but they have all been LineX coated after being bead blasted.

The later larger fan motor is single speed motor. The extra speeds are done with external wiring and a big resistor. Sometimes it is wired up as a 2 speed and more often as a 3 speed, depending on the resistor. When used for A/C is it wired for 3 speeds with a 2 speed resistor for the 2 lower speeds. If you want to safely add it to an earlier van you need to do some wiring because it takes more amps. The shroud is different, as mentioned.

Absolutely.
The fan resistors are a bugger to find new.
The Eurovan resistor is sold by VC and a few new ends are needed for the swap.

The wiring is a sub harness IIRC.
They can be had.

Thanks for all the good info guys.
My schedule just got turned upside down again so no idea when I can get time to work this mod with the later style AC fan.

Ahwanee - that is an 80A fuse I'm seeing in your schematic?
- what is the Amperage of the "High Speed Fan Relay"?
