It's like this, about all the "kitcars" out there are made of fiberglass, and are from a manufacturing co. I have only see one "book" on how to build your own body. I don't really know what you want to build, but good luck. Do you really know what goes into making your own body? You better have a lot of money, or be about the best bodyman this side of the Mississippi.

hey...not really mate...if u put ur mind to it...and used a lot of planning and fibreglass...u could do it...its not hard at all....if u know what u want then do it...but u'll need moulds which could take ages and be quite expensive...once u have got the basic shape...i'd say its just a matter of laying on the fibreglass with resin and sanding smooth..then putting either a lot of body putty..or use a spray putty...

Acutally that is what I do. I am a bodyman in New Jersey and been in the business for 15 years and think I am well equiped. Thanks for the info though. I am looking for plans for a VW based kit or Lamborghini plans. They are a few ways to create a fiberglass body molds, fiberglass over foam etc...

Plans like what Robert Q. Riley Enterprises offers www.rqriley.com for their kits, www.lamborghinireplica.com, or www.kitcarworkshop.com. These site offers plans for their cars. From basiclly start to finish. I have purchased a set of plans from R.Q. Riley for the Boonie Bug and it tells you the dimensions of the frame body, length etc... This is what I am looking for. From what undersrtand I think that IFG www.ifgonline.com used to do this as well but not sure.

Sounds like a confusion of symantecs. rqriley does not have kits- they sell the plans, but not parts to complete, right? So that's not a 'kit' car, it's a fabrication plan.

True they do not sell parts to complete a kit. But the plans use a donor car as any other kit car would except that you are not buying a kit such as the body, etc... You are still creating a kit car in a sense. A majority of kit cars require some form of fabrication as some point or another. What about a 31 Ford or Lamborghini?? If you fabricate the frame or body isn't that still considered a kit car. You have not purchased a kit. YOU created the kit... Although a 31 Ford would not be condsidered a kit car more of a Hot Rod instead. I have also seen plans for a 31 Ford build up and Lamborghini. Same as what R.Q.Riley sells... That would not be considered a kit car?????

Just my opinion, but what I think most people would find as acceptable definitions...
In my book if you buy a replica or custom body, it's a kit car.
If you bought a Lamborghini Diablo with a trashed chassis and created one from scratch out of oak wood and put a BMW v-12 in it, it's still a Lamborghini.
If you bought a Diablo replica body that was not produced by Lamborghini, then it's a kit car, even if you fabricated brakes, suspension, frame and a powerplant from scratch- because the end product is based on a manufactured body.
If you build a Diablo look-alike body from foam and hand-laid fiberglass and put it on a VW chassis, that is not a kit car- it's a custom bodied VW. If you create a mold and start selling the body, then it's the prototype for a kit car. |
