a friend gave me a 1.7 ltr. 914 engine for a vw bus. In what year busses can I use the pancake engine? Need to know before I shop for a camper bus with a shot engine. Thanks for the help.

You would probably have better luck if this was in the bus section (split/or bay). I beleive the later bay era busses had a variety of the engine found in a 914,more commonly known as the Type 4 engine.
Not sure the age of the bus you are interested but here is a little info.

1972-79 The dipstick will be in the wrong location but it will still work.

If you are looking a buses get a 1973 or later with the inside engine lid.

I put a 914 1700 into a 1974 Westy.

It worked fine I did change the gearbox after a couple of years to a 1969 gearbox, as the main road I was driving went fron seal evel to 2400 in 5 miles and the earlier box gave me a better 2nd to 3rd gearing with all the weight that I was hauling.
