I have been reading the postings on timing and timing marks but am still having trouble. I have one clear notch on the inside rim of the crankshaft and a more shallow indentation on the outside rim. I'm not sure whether the outer mark means anything and what the inside mark indicates, 7 deg BTC, 10 deg BTC or what. Appreciate the help as I need to adjust valves and check timing and want to be sure I have TDC clearly indicated. Its a Brazilian rebuilt case (no serial number), 1600 cc, single port. Thanks. |

I have a 1600cc stock 79 Super engine and I have the same two marks. I'd like to know what that shallow indentation on the outer rim means as well. |

There is only one real way to know where TDC is. You have to take off your valve cover (for 1&2 cylinders) and pull out the spark plug for cylinder #1. Rotate the engine (clockwise) until both valves are closed, on cylinder #1, and when the #1 cylinder is all the way up (I use a screw drive inserted through the spark plug hole to determine this). Mark your pulley at the crank case seam and that is TDC. Your rotor should also be pointing at the notch on the distributor too when it is at TDC. After you do all of this, you can get a better idea at what the notches mean on your pulley. |

You don't have to do the pull the plug routine.... just pull the valve cover and watch for the #1 intake valve to go in and when it comes out(starts to) look at the crank pulley and keep turning until you get to where the marks on the pulley are...
And like Truckermike sez the rotor should line up with the notch on the rim of the distrib (however if your drive is in 180 out or off any teeth at all this MAY NOT BE TRUE)
Now there are several stock pullies out there... and unless you know for sure your engine is original, you could have ANY OL PULLEY on there that someone put on at some point.....
the one you and Supervert are describing...
is a later model...
the outer notch IS TDC 0 degrees....
if the notch on inside is to the LEFT of that mark that is actually 5 degrees ATDC or retarded... that is the mark for the stock dual vacume advance distributor...
( an 009 will NOT run set there or will run like crapola...)
Hope this helps.... |
