I looked this up for clarification and the next poster is right.
Early watercooled Canadian vans had a protective cover for the optional BA6 gasoline heater.
NOT the same as a “belly pan”, which was found on diesels and having a sound absorber mat. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit

Fixing some wiring in the back, here is some appendage that I have never understood:
Trailer hitch wiring? When I got this van it had a hitch on it.
What is the square flat electrical box under this connector used for?
Should I just tear all this junk out? _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

It looks like the electronics for the trailer hitch wiring, which converts separate brake and blinkers, like on the Vanagon, to brake OR blinkers, like on trailers. |

Does anyone know where this paper baffle came from?
Found it floating around in the grill area. Could it have covered the driver’s side behind the grill? I installed an air horn in there a while back and may have left it out for more noise. I looked for any such mounting holes and found none. BTW this is a diesel, but it shouldn’t make any difference. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

There's 1 of those on each side of the upper radiator, between the rad and the headlights.
They break down, and folks typically make a new one out of campaign signs or something like that.

Those look suspiciously like heater fan speed resistors, possibly not Vanagon, hacked out of their plastic holders. They tend to melt down in the middle of winter. I can understand why someone would hoard them, at one time they were hard to find and expensive. Nowadays we just use an electronic speed adjuster. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

I know this is not original Vanagon Westy stuff, but found these parts in my very early 1980 westy. Any idea what they might have been intended for?
Possibly to stand off the rear hatch cracked open for ventilation?
Made of aluminum drilled and turned stepped threaded pins and home made thumbscrews to hold them.

I think not, but I don't have any great suggestions either.

In the sink unit drawer. It was a very complete well cared for unit when I bought it after an engine fire in the early 1990's It is the 3rd oldest known Vanagon Westy in the US. Built in July, 1979.

They look like pieces to hold a hinged door or window ajar. |

Hello Friends,
I am diagnosing a no start issue on my friends 85 Automatic, we pulled the starter to bench test and this part shown below was all wired up with rusty connections:
My thought was that it was a voltage regulator, but preliminary guesses is that it may be aan after market solenoid? Can you help me ID it?
I busted a stud off of it, as seen in pic 1, while cleaning the contact points. Is this something VW made? Can I replace? If it is a after market solenoid, was it trying to replace stock, could an old PO not been able to find VW stock?
There appeared to be an old solenoid on the starter that had the BIG FAT wire from the battery attached to it, but then was tied into this piece.
The starter works fine so we are going to place it back in, I just need to figure out this unit. _________________ ~Bryan

That's just a generic start solenoid. Any Flaps should be able to source one. |

Looks like a user built hard start relay.
There are better options available. |

Thanks,
Now the question is why use this and not a stock VW setup? Which I would have to figure out through the manual to wire up. |
VW didn't use a relay, so there was no stock setup. |

It's a Duralast F496-style starter solenoid... the F496 is commonly used in the Mk1 VW world as a hard- (or hot-) start relay and is known to be pretty stout.
VW never made a hard-start relay, but they did sell/provide the Bosch WR1 hard-start (aka low voltage) relay kit. _________________ ~Kamz
