Putting a new alternator in a 73 beetle. When I try to re torque the alternator fan nut, it binds once it is halfway on. I'm afraid to torque it too hard for fear of crossthreading the bolt, but it doesn't appear to be crossthreaded.

Are the designed to bind as they tighten?

Also, does the dished washer go on convex or concave surface against the fan?

The nut should thread on easily until it starts compressing the big spring washer. If you try without the washer (as an experiment), does it thread on more?

torque it too hard

40 - 47 ft/lbs on both front and rear 'nuts' is required. Shims are required between the fan and the hub for a .080 of clearance between the fan's outer edge and the cover.

That is not correct. The "concave" side of the washer is the side the two sides of the washer bend TOWARD. That side
goes towards the nut, so that the nut flattens out the bends as it gets tightened.

I think the washer will actually flatten and provide tension against the nut and fan either way.

The way you are saying to do it, Cusser, makes it harder to line up the oval shape of the washer hole with the oval shape of the hub extension. The bottom side of the nut has a groove cut into for the 'ears' of the curved washer to fit. Putting the oval on the hub first with the 'ears' pointing towards the nut guarantees the oval will stay lined up. Besides, that's the way the Bentley book says to do it too.

Go by what the Bentley says. Honestly: I haven't had to R&R a generator in one of my VWs in at least 25 years !
