Hello gang. I'm looking for a part number, vendor link, or possible alternative solution for the rubber Oring that is located on air cleaner to carb elbow and elbow to oil bath connections.
Seen below N. And O. Pictured in diagram/link

Can't say where to get one new but a lot of used elbows and hangers have one stuffed in there. That's where I scavenge mine. Usually the hanger ones are like new when you pry it out. They aren't really an o-ring, as such, but more of a fat thick rubber band type dealie. Gotta have one to keep the carb from getting dust and they are usually missing there.

carb side:

211 129 643 late
261 129 643 early

hung air cleaner side:

261 129 643

Thank you for that very helpful information!! Forgive my inexperience, what would be considered early cut of year 57? The bus in question is a 62 so I would bet it is late

216 100 000 chassis is the old to new cutoff. I don't know what's different as through '67's all fit the same gasket to me (even Bays). Someone else know what's different? It's about February '66 where it changes.

I couldn't find one listed anywhere, and my old one was toast, so I cut a new one out of thick rubber gasket material.

If I wasn't so damn particular I wouldn't know either!! Thank God for diagrams, but they have to be the cause of my hair loss Shocked every time I find I'm missing a part I also find its NLA.

If anyone has any used gaskets please on me. I need the elbow to carb one for sure as well as the elbow to oil bath.

I'm trying to find an oil bath air cleaner locally in Malaysia, to no avail, but as a stop gap solution to your problem, can you use the air flap vent seal, cut out a length long enough to make an O and use that ?

Ok, I found a source for the carb-to-elbow rubber ring. http://www.mecatechnic.com/vw_classic_parts.asp?search=C055948

Has anyone in USA ordered from this place and how do you do it? I can't see a picture but can you trust the part numbers to match original parts?

The part number is 211 129 643. Btw, an o-ring doesn't work well and can squish out and get all the way past the throttle or jam the throttle wide open.

I'm not in the states, but if you're worried about whether they're reputable, I've ordered from them with no problem. I couldn't find rear hub seal carrier bolts in stock in the UK (only on back-order from Brazil), but they had them.

Thom, did you glue yours in? I tried a tight fit fat one and found it squished into the throat. I tried a skinny one that laid in the little channel and it kept falling out when I tried to turn it over. I tried glue and later found it down the throat from suction as the clamp weasels slightly loose the the pot metal squishing, I guess.

Who.Me, I meant is the part actually square on the cross section like original? There's no photo and I couldn't find a French-to-English button. Are these parts that say "VW Classic Parts" the parts that VW in Germany are reissuing? Is the store in France? Is this a better source https://www.vwheritage.com/vw.cfm?act=vwclassicPar...p;lang=EN? I emailed them the cross section question. Is there an actual German VW Classic store in Germany?

Ahh, got you. Email them. They speak English. Usually takes 24-48 hours to get a response if you email them on weekdays.

VW Classic Parts (flagged with the rectangular blue logo) are genuine parts supplied by VW. (See http://www.volkswagen-classicparts.de/startseite/?L=2&cHash=f960acb4410473343d891da8c2e4172e. I'm not sure if they have a bricks-and-mortar store though). Some come from Germany, some come from Brazil etc.

When I went to my local VW dealer to ask them if they could get classic parts, they said that they used to be able to order them in, but a few years ago, VW appointed VW Heritage (in the UK) as the sole dealer. I'd guess Mecatechnic have the french licence.

In my experience, searching VW Heritage, Mecatechnic or http://www.volkswagen-classicparts.de/ for genuine parts brings up the same results in terms of availability and price (i.e. they're searching the same database), although sometimes the dealer has an odd item in stock that VW Classic Parts has run out of. The only real difference I've found between them is their shipping costs.

That explains it. I'll order from the guys that speak the language that ended up being my language. When I get an email reply I'll post it up.

Measure it (thickness and diameter)...then the rest of us can glue one up out of this o-ring stock from McMaster: http://www.mcmaster.com/#o-rings/=ysr1io

Great idea. I'll do it in the morning PDT.

The diameter is a smidge larger but almost exact than the carb elbow mating clamp is I.D.

Because that is McMaster-Carr, you want that in inches, right?

They have an assortment of square profile o-rings in both metric and inches.

If nothing matches, they also have both metric and inch square-profile o-ring stock. Up to 6mm square in metric, and up to 3/4" square in inches. With the stock, you'd cut to length and superglue it together for the diameter you need.
