|
|
I have rebuilt FI 2.0 engine on my 78 Westfalia. After the initial break in period I went to adjust the valves after about 3000 miles of driving.
I made double sure I was at top dead center to start on the first cylinder valves and each cylinder I had to unscrew the valves much further (2 full turns) than I though to get the .006 clearance. The question is, is this typical for a rebuilt engine with new valves in them? Having to make big adjustment to the valves after they are broken in a bit. |

| Sure you don't have hydraulic lifters? Either that or you are adjusting #! when the engine is positioned at TDC for #3. |

| How do I know if they are Hydraulic lifters? Do hydraulic lifters not need adjusting? |

I just read the ratwell write up on hydraulic lifters. I'm going to call the shop that rebuilt the engine to see if they put hydraulic or solid lifters in.
I hope i didn't jack up my engine. |

Hydraulic lifters have visible clips on the pushrod end of them.
Get a flashlight, try to peer down the tube, past the rockers and down along the pushrods. If you get the right angle and have good eyes, you may be able to see the clips on the inner diameter of the lifters.
Otherwise, pain in the butt as it is, pull a pair of rockers and then a pushrod out, then you can see clips down the tubes if they're there.
Also, hydraulic lifters should have solid spacers on the rocker shafts. |

also, hydraulic lifters should have steel pushrods vs aluminum pushrods for non-hydraulic
if you have the push rod out just check it with a magnet _________________ Click to view image |

Good point...in fact, mine look like one-piece units that simply taper down (as opposed to the aluminum ones with steel ends plugged in).
If you have a small enough magnet, you can reach a push rod and then you don't need to take anything apart. |
