Hello, friend of mine has a 69 1500 type 1 beetle. They changed the oil and cleaned the screen and ever since has a tapping like valve setting.changed oil and used 40 wt Rotella,no brass or silvery shimmer in oil. reset valves to .006 still no good.went back and set to .004 still did not change.i cannot think of anything that could have happened with an oil change.motor was running fine just was going do minor maintenance.have changed plugs, points, condenser, set timing, ran valves multiple times still same sound.
any thoughts? the plugs were black/rich especially on #3
any thoughts would be welcomed

You can't really "read" plugs if it's just been short jaunts and idling. But they should not be related to this issue anyway.

The noise, that's so hard to say without hearing it in person. Any chance for a video?

You mean straight 40W oil?

There are things that can happen that may cause clackety noises but they seldom "just happen" like this. Rod knocks usually start showing up after a hard drive (let off the gas a bit, and the Death Rattle kicks in), a camshaft with loose rivets on the gear can make noise, and rods with excessive side clearance can too, and I've seen all of those happen before, but they should not just show up after some PM.

Man 40 weight oil is like THICK.
Do a complete tune up valve adjust timing etc. change the oil to 10 30 rotella.

Fix the exhaust leaks.

Climb around on the ground with engine running
put one end of a few foot section of garden hose to your ear
probe all exhaust connections one at a time with other end

tighten connections
or replace gaskets and then tighten connections

assemble with never seize and re-tighten after heat cool cycle as many times until it doesn't tighten anymore after heat cool cycle

was thinking about possible exaust leaks also. will tell him to go back to 30 wt oil. just dont see what changing oil had do with it getting a tap. have set valves multiple times thinking possibly little off but never was an issue.went from.006-.004 and back to .006 and still no change. maybe it was just that time for something. thanks

Mine was ticking even after a valve adjustment. My adjusting screws were shot like in the picture. Replaced all of them and it solved my problem. I love it when a fix costs less than 25 bucks and a little bit of my time (which I enjoy spending on the car).

Shell Rotella is multi viscosity diesel engine oil,15/40 weight...to find your knock remove one spark plug wire at a time with the engine idling (loosen the wires from the distributor cap before you do this and realize you might get shocked if youre not careful) generally if the noise doesn't change its a loose valve adjustment,if it does its a rod knock..
