I totally agree with you on they should wear out to protect the paint but I was thinking more about the fact that if they wear out in like 30 seconds after a couple passes of scraping, that is going to get old fast.

Anyway, interested to know how they work.

No they last quite awhile. I've had none break so far, they more just loose their edge. I've stripped about 1/2 the bus and have used around 20 of them, usually having a few on the go at the same time as they're easy to drop and misplace.

Well happy to report I'm finally done stripping the repaint! Took 6 gallons of acetone, 3 quarts laquer thinner, 100+ pieces of steel wool, 40 plastic razors, 10 rolls of blue shop towel, roll of plastic drop cloth, 60 hrs of my time. Honestly have mixed feelings on how it turned out, but upwards and onwards. Here's some pics of the pass side, which was the last side I had to finish. Pretty sure I lost a few brain cells too, even wearing s respirator, lol

This last pic shows the gloss with a quick pass of zymol cleaner wax.

The thing is, no matter how it turns out, it still shows that you cared about an inanimate object enough to lay your hands on it for all that time.

It shows.

From my perspective the time and effort was well spent!

Its only original once and you did a great job getting back to whats there. I would blend the rough areas and run it.

Sure, delivered in primer and then after being painted by Westfalia.

Maybe he can strip it back to the original primer next. Wink

Don't feel too bad, mine was painted pink and purple.

Try using some xylene on the paint you want to remove that is painted over the Westy brown. It has almost no effect on the softer Westy paint. I tried all sorts of other chamicals and they all wanted to remove the brown.

Thanks for the tip I'll try it out, have some in the cupboard. Didn't do much on the outside, but the inside looks like it could just be latex. Here's hoping!

Looks great. Do you think this bus had silver white bumpers and wheels?

Looks like the bumpers and front emblem where the contrasting light blue. The emblem came from VW painted white, the bumper look like it came in primer, both painted at westfalia. No idea in the wheels as these aren't the orig ones, and are dated 1/63.

I would expect that the wheels would match the bumpers and emblem.

Me too. Just gotta find a set of the right date codes. This bus was built Dec 12 58, what months would be correct?

Thanks! Just read your build thread and its impressive to say the least. I can't believe you did all that work outside like that. I won't ever complain about my large 2 car garage being too small Smile Epic pictures too.

I would guess 10/58 or 11/58 but a little earlier would be ok too.
