So I want to get my door handles rechromed but not sure how to disassemble them including getting the lock barrels out. I need to do it for both cab doors, sliding door and both tailgate locks.
This is a 71 van.
Anyone? |

The handles release easily enough, one big phillips head near the latch,
accessible in the jamb when the door is open.
One tiny bolt, it may be an allen or an 8mm, you do remove the door
interior card along with pull strap, handle cover, window crank, maybe
disconnect any speaker/wire.
The tumbler comes out after that, one more phillips screw, it's on
the revere side of the handle, opposite where the key goes,
cylinder drops out to the key entrance side. |

Look for a very tiny set screw that holds the lock cylinder in place. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

A quick search of this topic Rekeying a lock - Tutorial gave me the following post.

Max,
first off, flip the handle over so that it's "right side up" (the way it would be if it was on the door)
the little screw is here (where the tiny screwdriver is pointing).. on yours it's probably obscured by some corrosion.
once you get the screw out, the tumbler should come right out, and also the "deadbolt" too, which moves to the right.
From the looks of yours (from your pictures) at least your lock is in the "unlocked" position, so the collar (the chrome thing that the deadbolt locks against) is off. Mind you, if your lock is locked and you don't have a key, you can't get the collar thing off to get at the screw, so you _have_ to have a key made from the code, just to unlock it so that you can take the tumbler out
actually, it looks like there are cases where you can be doubly screwed, if you have a handle that is locked- you don't have the key- and the collar is obscuring the code so you can't get a key made. |
