|
|
So on my 74 bus the wipers on both speeds worked fine, got in a heavy down pour and the stopped in the up position.
Luckily it was daylight and I use rain X.
Anyway after the rain stopped I check the on the outside nuts they were not loose I pushed the wipers down and they moved together by hand.
Turned the key in ignition and heard the motor going but no wipers going. Slid the switch on steering column to off and still heard the motor going - will only shut off with the ignition key turning off in all three positions of wiper switch.
I looked up at the linkage and its still intact - under the dash.
Relay?
but still motor spins but no arms move.
Thanks in advance for any help. _________________ Nothin left to do....

read through a few of those - but also wondering why the motor still runs when "switched" off
it does speed up when put in faster speed motion for wipers.
So motor on with key
no blades move
motor speeds up when switch is turn up fo higher speed.\
Nuts not stripped. _________________ Nothin left to do....

The large plastic gear in there also runs the park contacts, if it failed in any position other than park the motor is costantly trying to get it back to park.
Tight unlubed pivots and linkage put alot of strain on that poor old plastic gear, sometimes just the middle twists out, other times the worm gear chews the teeth off of it, I suspect the latter in your case. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

See the small arrows on the white gear in this photo? Those are the 12v tracks for electricity to run your motor. When the switch is in either "on" position, the inner arrow path is picked up by the bruises that are circled and out of focus, (sorry.) When the switch is off, the outer brush path is always activated. It is only when the outer "switch off" powered brush reaches the "blank" spot where the metal becomes plastic that the circuit is broken and the wipers park themselves.
This is my hypothesis:
Your wipers stopped in the up position because the white gear or something else in the mechanism stripped. Now, remember how in any switch position one of the two brushes is getting 12v? The white gear is stuck in a position where both bruises are conducting on the metal ring, but it is stripped so no matter what the motor does the white gear (and wiper arms) won't move.
Please now: take your wiper arms off in case the motor and gears decide to catch, you don't want the arms running down and scripting the heck out of your nose.
Luckily for you, you get to disassemble, troubleshoot, and lubricate your wiper assembly now. It's actually one of the more fun jobs on the bus. Lack of lubrication is probably also what cause the part to fail in the first place. Please let us know how it goes.

So things are apart and yes the plastic is done.
I ordered a new one from Bus depot. Will install and fix some leaks around the wiper holes with $1.50 grommets from Bus depot. Maybe even around the windshield too.
If any one wants the motor, as is, let me know may be useable or interchanged with a proper Plastic piece.
PM me. we can talk shipping. _________________ Nothin left to do....

Spend the time to dismantle the pivots and clean/regrease them now or you'll be changing the new motor soon _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

True this.
I fried a early 1962 notchback wiper motor because the shaft grease was done and hard. Try and find a wiper motor for an early - not even done teething VW car in a country where they weren't imported till 5 years after yours was born Not fun. So with yours out - check the shafts _________________
