I pulled these off a 1971 DP motor that came with a parts bus. I'd like to clean them up and install them on a 1970 SP motor I am having built. How can I tell if they are bus vs. bug and if they are complete? It seems like the levers are different; are they supposed to be? Let me know if it would help if I take more photos.

Hi there,

The left side exchanger is a universal replacement, sold by several aftermarket companies. Check to see if it has as many or more fins as the other on the inside; most don't. The exchanger on the right looks to be an OG bug heat exchanger; again the number of fins on the inside will tell you the difference.

The bay bus levers are located higher up than bug levers, as a general rule. Because the bug cables come out so much lower, they need the intermediate pivoting action of the more complex lever to get proper heater actuation.

So, in fewer words, neither of those are great for your bus, but at least the left side exchanger will bolt in and give you some heat without any modifications.

Robbie

Crap - Thanks.

"The left side exchanger is a universal replacement, sold by several aftermarket companies."

Left side in the top photo or the bottom photo?

neither one is correct for a bus

true bus exchangers don't have the post on the side that the beetle levers attach to.

they just have the top lever where the cable attaches to, an no linkage to use the bug ones

BUT

if they are german and weigh a ton, I would use them. german exchangers make my s/c *barely* tolerable in cold weather. dansk...not so much

I bought a dansk set to skin them and use them on my german guts. worked real well

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public.

I mean left, as in, front is front. So the heat exchanger that mounts on the USA drivers' side is left, regardless of picture. Cool
