I have a "bastard" 40hp that im rebuilding and i'm looking for main bearings and a front main seal. The case # is 3413453 and its out of a 59'. From what i gather its a 1st gen bastard with the thrust on the #2 bearing. The heads are 113 101 371 with the round rocker boss. The case is at the machine shop and checks out good, no line bore needed and the crank just needed to be polished. so i just need standard / standard bearings and a seal!! any body got any ideas?

You have been a Samba member two years longer than me and might have already seen this forum topic: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=187275

If not check it out. There is a ton of info in these 18 pages.

Also, I too will be "rebuilding" a 1st generation bastard engine. From everything I have read, the reason for the typical catastrophic failures was the thrust bearing being relocated to the #2 journal. I figure I will have Rimco convert mine to thrust on #1. They claim that they can do that for me.

Please PM me when you get it done and let me know what route you plan to take and how it worked out for you.

Also, I replied to your WTB a seal ad. They will work perfectly. Even better, they are new, not 50+ year old rubber with 50+ years of potential rubber deterioration working on it.

Good Luck

Maybe it was converted already...where is the crankshaft thrust bearing at?

BTW I have a couple spare good 2nd gen bastard motors I would sell if anyone needs.

Ok, been out of town for a bit. Talked with Rimco today because thats where the case was sent to get work if needed originally. Gary said they hadn't converted a gen 1 case to a standard thrust before but would think about it.
Redlocker, thanks for the quick reply on the seal. now ill have to see how the 1mm difference will affect the thrust and shims. This is going back in the original bus that is being fully restored so its either original bearings or try to convert.

The reason I spent a lot of time researching to find a replacement seal was that I am planning on doing the same thing as you. When the funds allow, I will be converting; but for now an ordinary 40 horse will suffice until the paint work is finished (it hasn't even been started yet).

Interesting that RIMCO said that hadn't converted one before. The first guy I spoke with must have been young and knew nothing about the existence of the Bastard 40. He then got someone who had worked there a long time and who had claimed that they had converted from #2 to #1 thrust in the past. Well please keep posted on which route you take.

The 1mm difference in the seal thickness will have no effect on the thrust setting or anything else. This is the crank seal. Crank seals go on the outside of the block/bearing web and the crank passes through it and rotates when running.

Please keep me/us updated on the rebuild route and progress.

I will keep this going with updates. I take lots of pics for the motors i do but I'm too lazy to post them. The seal I'm curious about, not doubting you. I know how the seals work. Here's what im thinking...new thrust surface on crank (or get a regular 40hp crank) and new thrust surface on OG flywheel ( or reg 40hp flywheel) will change depth of where the seal sits on flywheel. Correct? flywheels are not straight they have a radius, so after all this possible machine work where will the seal sit? That's all. Still looking for standard/standard gen 1 bearings in the mean time. Any leads are appreciated!!!
