I'm in the middle of assembling a 1.7 Type 4 motor and I ran into a head scratcher on the oil pickup, not much mentioned in Tom Wilson or the Bentley.

I need to know the correct bolt size/length that passes through the left case half (cylinder 3/4 side near lifters) and passes through this oil pickup holding it in place (at least I think it does).

The bolt goes here: (my finger is pointing)

Here is a bolt which might be correct, though the threads are damaged. I was pretty careful about labeling all of the separate hardware but may have overlooked this one.

Is this the right bolt?

look inside the case to see if the threads are damaged where it screws into the other side of the case. Usually the bolts are bent a little and blackened from the oil. I have some NOS ones somewhere at home. They are a special length but you can get something locally and cut it back. I paid about $5 a piece for the special ones when shipping was included.

They also use a copper washer to seal them.

I believe the part number is N 010 373 2

8mm 1.25 pitch x 72mm

Does anyone know where I can find information confirming the lengths of the M8 bolts that are used to re-assemble the type 4 block...

I'm referring to the bolts numbered 27, 28, 35, and 72 (and the one adjacent to the cam shaft cap (located inside the bell housing area) in the above diagram. I have a 2.0 litre 914 that I'm rebuilding, I have the 6 main bolts but the remainder of the engine casing bolts are missing

Thanks

You can get a grade 10.9 washer head bolt at a lot of hardware stores that will work here. The grade 10.9 is a bit tougher than the stock 8.8 and IIRC the available length is a bit longer thus spreading the load out over a bit more distance.

Using a stud isn't a bad idea here either as they tend to be a higher grade than an 8.8 bolt and if you get the correct length you can make use of the full length of the threads. Be sure you use sealant under the head of whatever fastener you do use or you will end up with oil seeping out.

The normal warning here is not to overtighten the nut that holds the cover over the pickup screen doing so can bend the through bolt and may also crack the threaded boss on the one half of the block.
