There are two kinds of pumps for the Type I upright engine.
1. Generator style fuel pump
2. Alternator style fuel pump, which is angled to clear the alternator
It is important you choose the correct Push Rod for the pump you are using.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUSHROD
First determine if the Fuel pump Plunger arm (flange) is Recessed or Protruding.
If Recessed it takes the longer Push rod = 108mm (4.25")
If Protruding it takes the shorter Push rod = 100mm (4")
There was also a angled pump with a Generator style base produced.
So double check before you buy the Push rod.
Generator style Push rod 113 127 307 - Recessed plunger arm = 108mm (4.25) Pushrod.
Alternator style Push rod 113 127 307 A - Protruding plunger arm = 100mm (4") pushrod.
On some Aftermarket Pumps the In and Out are reversed.
So test pump before hooking up hoses.
You will also need to adjust the pushrod height and pressure per your repair manual. Make sure the Intermediate flange, the plastic piece the Push rod goes through does not bind in the case. If it does when it gets hot it will seize the Push rod and stop pumping and you will be wondering why you are running out of gas.

FUEL PUMP TESTING
FI PUMP SPECS
| ratwell wrote: |
With the pump running unrestricted, 1.5-2L/min is the minimum. I tested my pump and it does 2-2.25L/min.
With the pressure regulator (PR) attached, there should be at least 1L/min coming out of the PR. This is naturally hard to test when the fuel tank is not empty but it's easy to do on the bench. |

Operating Pressure: 43.5 PSI (3 Bar)
Minimum Flow @ Outlet: 34 GPH (130LPH)

Hey Tcash,
I'm pretty sure that the type 1 1971 bus engines used the dome tops all the way through 1971 vs. the fuel pump that the bug changed to in 1971. The bugs used the square top until switching to the crimp top pumps in mid 1970.
Here's a picture from a 1971 dual port bus engine.

Domed top with two pressed in nipples right. I found a picture of one but lost it.
When I run across one, I will plug it in.
Thank you

Doubt if this thing was ever replaced. Cleaned up the years of gunk, but you can see the bosch and vw numbers there. The barb on the input is so corroded it's flat on one side.
The screen was inside the input.
Here's the instructions from the new one mentioning the screen, but maybe it's referring to the inline fuel filter.

Is there a performance difference between the dome top and square top? Would the square top work as well in the 71 bus?

There's no performance difference. Both pumps put out 3psi. The main difference between the two pumps is the Square top has a built in fuel shut off valve at the top. The dome tops had to have a seperate flow valve mounted in some applications. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

What do you mean by "performance"? The '71 bus was equipped with the 34 PICT-3 carb, and the corresponding pump was the later crimped-top (un-rebuildable) pump
with an output pressure spec of 3-5 psi. Any pump within that spec will work fine. The round- and square-top Pierburg pumps had various output psi specs, ranging up
to 4.5 psi for the ones put in the dual-carb Type 3's. Any of the Pierburg pumps will work excellent in a '71 bus, with generator or alternator. The square-top I have in my
'71 bus has been running trouble-free for almost 20 years.
This assumes parts are all stock. Those old rebuildable pumps are very likely to have a replacement diaphgragm installed,
which could be as good as original, or completely unsuitable. There are qualified rebuilders advertising right here in thesamba.com classifieds. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Thanks kreem, looking to buy a square-top from Bill. Just always afraid of doing something wrong, 'cuz I've done so many stoopid things before... _________________

Hello, first post on here. This thread has the most info i have found about the T2 fuel push rod. OEM # 021-127-307. I got the bright idea to go from the electric lift pump setup on my 73 camper to the mechanical setup when I seen Cip1 started stocking the mech. Pump. However just found out they don’t carry the pushrod. Only source I could find was from just campers and brickworks but I can’t justify spending 27 pounds on a pushrod and 75 pounds to ship it to Canada. Does anyone have and extras kicking around or know of a better source? I have even contemplated making my own??? Also if anyone has the spec or what the cam lift should be? Doesn’t seem to be lots of info out there about this as everyone seems to go electric. I have been sceptical about the fuel setup on my bus from day one as it somehow filled the engine block with fuel the first week I owned it.
Thanks for reading |
