it seems to be a very proper, cared for bus...for sure.

could you post some good photos of the pop top, from inside? basically just the hole and surrounding area cut in the roof.

I have a gut feeling someone added this at some point. still, the interior is for sure home made

EDIT again Laughing

is the paint on the sliding door a off white/beige-y color? and evidence of that anywhere else in the cargo area? if so...it was for sure born a kombi

This is a "coach built" camper- a la Riviera. All of these started life as Kombis.

i have a late 68 built (69 model year) westy that i have owned for 25 years for comparison. your bus is 'modified' for sure but its also in decent shape. that side jalousie looks suspicious, its missing a lot of stuff, it doesnt look like an original campmobile build to me. also the transmission is not a desirable one. id say its worth maybe 10-11k at most.

edit: i now see the rest of the thread, basically what skills said

Hello and thanks for the continued discussion. I've posted pics below.

I am sure I used the term "original" incorrectly, it was meant to refer to the fact that it is now as it was back in 1968. Structurally that is. The windows, doors, panels, frame, undercarriage, pedal rubber, no rust, seats, etc, all seem like new to me but of course the camper part was done here by all indication.

Engine runs great! New at 95k which was about 40k ago. Maybe a bit more. Transmission is fine as far as I can see.

Here are a few more pictures. Perhaps this might help shed some light on questions posed earlier.

It's looking more and more like a Riviera to me, actually- either that or something really close.

Don’t advertise it as an original paint, no rust bus or you will get ripped. If your skin is thick , then that doesn’t matter.

Price high if you don’t be mind taking 4-6 months to sell and fight the right dreamer from the Bauy area with money>> brains and you will get your 20k

I know online comments can be savage but why not say “no rust”? There really isn’t any. The paint I’m pretty sure is original too. How could I find out?

Thanks your advice. I’m not looking for some grand jackpot just whatever the market is.

My cousin had a 69 riviera much like that one, which he lived in for about 3 years back in the day! It was a conversion done in Vancouver, WA if I remember correctly. It had the square small pop top and a custom interior. It was converted and sold new as a camper, so perhaps that is what this is? Do you have paperwork back to new?

Thanks!

Chris

Hi Chris. Thanks for the comment. Among all the paperwork there is a mention somewhere as I recall that the bus was sold as a camper from the dealership.

I have loads of paperwork but almost all is from 1971-1991. 1991-now it’s been pretty much in storage. I love this bus!! Enjoyed reading your story.

By the way my dad loved VW bus and he was an incredible mechanic. In the mid 1970s he has a friend named Greg who lived in Bellevue in an old house at the entrance to the Pike Peak neighborhood. Greg had several VW and bought/sold them. My dad brought one home from him but it was a total POS even back then. My older brother hated it, which it was for him. So we got rid of it. Six years ago when I bought this one and showed my dad he got all emotional about how much he loved it. Just wanted to share that !!

Yes. These were converted from Kombis prior to first sale.

On edit....your adhesive leftover from trip strip totally fooled me for weld seam rust!

That being said....

Because “rust-free” is in the eye of the beholder.

Just take lots of pictures underneath, wheel tubs, rockers, front axle, etc. you will have 50-100 when done

Zip those all into a folder and hold tight.

Post up three to six good shots in the ad, no more. People with cash need a couple of good pictures to see its a nice dry Bus to be motivated to come see it. You can send those willing to schedule a trip the zip file of comprehensive pictures.

This gets rid of the dreamers , schemers, and flippers.

Your ad isn’t to find a buyer. It’s to weed out the chaff.

I don't think so...I think he is really looking for a jumping off point.

it's a neat bus...but not all OE from the looks of it

IMHO He needs to change the subject line then to something like "Can someone estimate a value range? Otherwise we'd have 1000 threads here in a row that said I want to sell this bus but don't know if I priced it right. Take a look. He wrote:

Hi, thank you. I'm new here and didn't know -- but you make a lot of sense. I just edited my title. Understand if this post is not appropriate in any other way and gets moderated.

Perfect. Lots of folks here know early Westphalia campers so they will give you a good opinion of value. Be sure to consider TheSamba classifieds when you go to sell it, if you sell it.

Also This is a beautiful Bus. My favourite colour too. Having all those maintenance records is very cool
