few quick questions, looking to do 2.2 or 2.5.
-1995 seems to be the best year for the 2.2?
-what are the best years for the 2.5?
-can I still use the stock vanagon transmission (unmodified) with the 2.5?
-are the newer 2.5s a lot more complicated to swap?
-is there a HP/Torque limit to the stock transmission? |

The 99 and 2000 2.2 were higher horse powered engines. Your trans will work with either an adapter plate from Kennedy engineering or a bell housing from Small Car Performance. Small Car has a list of model year subaru engines that they can make work. Making the ecu work on the newest models seems to be be a challenge. I think up to 2013 last time I looked. 2.5 engines after 2006 got a redesigned piston to help with piston slap. Although earlier 2.5s are still worthy. They say that later 2.5s also didnt have head gasket issues, they do. You should plan on doing them as well as re ringing it if you can. At least hone the cylinder a little. Newer 2.5s arent any more complicated. HP limit? Anything over stock will tax your drive train more, driving style will be a big factor. |

If you are okay with an interence engine, I am, then 1997 is the sweet spot for the 2.2. If you prefer a non interence engine then go for a 1996.
The 97 has lower internal friction loses. The 96 is the first year for full OBDII inplemetation. If you do decide on a 95 you may find OBDII implemented but it was not required and can be a bit strange. 96 is the first year with engine serial numbers. In any get the vehichle identification plate and pictures of the under hood decals, you will need them later. _________________ Schau in das Buch |

im on the hunt for probably a wrecked Subaru. I like the idea of having a non interference engine and as afar as I have read the 2.2 has less head gasket issues. if I were to go with a interference I would probably jump up to the 2.5 but I all depends on what comes along. I just looking for what to target |

92 was the best year for the 2.2.

I got a 92. Love it. Bought the van with it installed. Supposedly one of the first conversions done by Rocky Mountain Westy. If I would start from scratch I would do 2.5. Newer, more power, obd2, ect. I would get Burley oil pan/ engine carrier no doubt. Have Jeff do your wireing. Do your timming belt and don't worry about interference. Engine out change the head gaskets, easy. Got $$$ put in Subaru transmission. Go camping. Be happy. |

Early 2.2 is the only Ca. legal Sub motor. Just saying in case you want to sell it one day (Ca. is the biggest single market for buyers) |
