Bought this thing back in '07 for $5k in a package deal that included a 67 13 window, 66 beetle, and sheds and barns full of new and used parts.
Sold a bunch of the stuff, so basically the DC was free.
It wasn't too rusty but was well used, not a single straight panel on the entire truck except the roof. Major collision damage on the passenger A pillar and the high hinge B pillar on that side had been replaced with a low hinge. A real rolling Turd.
Anyway, I drove it for years like that, using it to haul parts etc.but about four years ago decided to restore it since some of the rust was advancing and the passenger door was about to fall off.
Anyway, took it to my friends shop who is a VW bus nerd and excellent metal man since I had too many other projects.
Much has been done since, mostly removing metal, replacing the front floor and cargo floor, some outriggers, jackpoints, some truck specific nonsense, and and a few other items I've forgot about.
Anyway, this is where it sits now with a lot of Autocraft and some Gerson stuff back on its looking a bit like a truck again. Next step is for me to shoot some Dove Blue in the inner truckbed area as well as the backside of the bed panels and corners before he seals the area up.
As found back in the winter of '07 in Julian, CA with my then 10 year old son who is now 22.

Spent six hours at Josh's shop prepping the bed area for paint. First I used some Ospho with a scuff pad on some surface rust, then grease and wax cleaner with a pad to scuff the old POR 15 that was laid down a few years ago and was a bit weathered. I then sealed it, and sprayed single stage Urethane with a touch up gun cause I couldn't get my regular gun in all those confined spaces, so it took forever having to refill the damn gun.
Anyway, did two thick coats in the engine compartment, pretty much one thick everywhere else which n top of the POR and the sealer should keep the rust at bay.
The bed floors are painted on the down side, of course. And the inside of the corners will likely need some touch up after he welds them on. Which is the next step after I get him a new apron and decklid as the old ones are too roached to make it worth fixing them. Since the bus has so little OG sheet metal it's like why not?
In many ways this is going to be nicer than stock because they did a shitty job in that area I painted, they didn't even bother shooting primer on the underside of the bed. I usually don't do over restored but it would be lazy and stupid to not spray it with it exposed like that. Plus it willlook SANO when done. I might have to rig some LEDs in there.

Fitting up the gates and ran into this problem.
Huge wedge shaped gap tween the side and rear gates.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Double check that the side gates are square.
Then check that the back of the cab is square to the bed. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

| Looks like the side gates should be adjusted back (if possible) and the rear gate hinges may need massaged. |

We tried moving the side gates back but that opens up a nasty gap then on the forward edge.
I looked at several pix in the gallery and it appears that the gates should fit with a minimal gap.
Will check with a square tomorrow. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Does it have the same exact condition on the passenger side too? If so, since that thing had been whacked before, maybe the whole thing is bowed down!?! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Yeah, same deal on the other side.
We considered that but if it were bowed down then wouldn't it make the gates tighter? It would have had to buckle up t force them apart. There is not noticeable bending in any of the structure. Not sure if he's put a straight edge on it, so that's another thing to do tomorrow.
The truck did take a sharp hit to the right side which wiped out the B pillar and later one to the front right which bent in the A. The rear sides had some sheet metal dents but nothing structural and the rear was never hit. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Just a heads up. Dont know if you are planning on running a canopy or not but the eyelets on the side gates on gersons are in the wrong place . Might want to measure them against stock and possibly re position before painting |
