You’re correct in that this isn’t one of the factory made prototype 4x4 vw split buses, therefore it isn’t a “true” 4x4 “splitty”.

On the other hand, comparing it to the infamous, fake, $125k 59 23w isn’t a very good comparison. That 59 was created with only one purpose, to get rolled across an auction block represented as genuine, and defraud bidders.

This 4x4 “splitty” wasn’t /isn’t being built to defraud anyone.

I don't know if that 59 was turned into a 23 to defraud someone. Maybe so.
Maybe it was built because some one just wanted a 23.
Could be someone else later sold it under false pretenses. You think that doesn't happen?

Funny to see you on that side of the debate.

I don't think the builder is trying to mislead anyone here.

I got the impression he was.
If he wasn't trying to mislead anyone, he would not have titled the build thread misleadingly. He wouldn't have been defensive about it.

Which side of which debate are you referring to?

As far as what you describe regarding the fake 59, yes I’m sure it happens as you described sometimes.

The fake 59 in question, though, was ran through the auction as a legit 23W by the same parties that did the work, which was recent. Also, the VIN was modified. They also tried previously to pass it off as a legit 23W here, until they got busted here by Brendan, so they then repainted the roof yet again prior to the Mecum auction. I think the totality of the evidence supports that it was built to defraud, not just because someone wanted a 23w. You’re entitled to your opinion, though, the same as the rest of us.

Using the word 'true' implies it is a factory build. But it truely is not. It is just a build.
It would be a cooler build if they didn't say it was something it isn't. Bummer about that

Howdy folks, I wish I had more time for this project. The good news is my friend Nick does and he is a metal master. I am going to throw some money at him and see how far it gets. Likely I can't afford to finish it but it is time for progress.

For Clara's clarification I don't think "True" implies a factory build. "Original" is terminology in the automotive world that would more accurately "imply" it is a factory build.

The "True" comes from the relationship with Steyr Puch and Volkswagen. In 1985 they released the Syncro van. A partnership to produce a 4WD VW van. The word "True" is used here to describe the comparative nature of the two vehicles. It is also a "what if" the relationship happened 20 years earlier.

I hope that helps you sleep better. No Fraud here just building my dream vehicle.

I for one, am hoping the build is still ongoing, or at least still in the plans and set aside until more time/money/resources become available.

The only real letdown would be if it sits unfinished and gets parted out.

It is definitely part of the dream and it will never get parted out. I just got sidetracked with a bunch of other stuff and other projects. It will get finished someday. I am going to try and sell off some other crap to pull together a budget for it.

I don't care what you call it, I just want to see the finished product in action, good to hear it'll be moving closer towards that soon! Cool

How's this project going? Recently stumbled across this forum and it's a heartbreaker that it's been about 2 yrs without an update.
