I'll be driving my 67 down to Vegas in late September from Sac. I'm going on a very tight budget. My department is having a softball tournament down there. I don't want, and can't afford to stay in one of the luxury casino hotels. I would like to stay near the newer end of town, but off the strip. Like a Best Western, Clarion, Holiday Inn, Motel 6....? Any one with some info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. _________________ Justin |

You would be better off trying to snag a special deal at one of the strip casinos. If you watch the travel sections or start hitting one of the internet travel websites (priceline, expedia, etc) you can almost certainly beat the rates the off-strip hotels charge.
Unless there is a big convention in town that weekend they all discount.
One place you might ask about is the San Remo, it is half a block down from the Tropicanna and it caters mostly to Asian group tours, but they have a small casino and the back door of the MGM is right across the street.
Just avoid Circus Circus at any price. It is a hellish nightmare, and prisons have better food than the Circus Circus buffet. |

| you can check out the Riviera. it's a little old but it's not that bad. we stayed there during an Electronics convention for work (it's close to the LV Convention Center) and i think it was only like $25-35 a night. |

Don't stay at America's Best Value Inn. My friend's folks stayed there one night and it was the filthiest they'd every seen.
The Stratosphere gets good marks from me though. I stayed there for about $45/night for a week with the travel package I got.

| If you don't want to be on the strip, your best bet (no pun), is about 1/4-1/3 mile west of the trop/strip intersection, at trop/industrial. A cluster of choices there. Motel 6 is about $30. Wild wild west is a good choice. $19 if you have a cdl....otherwise 24$. Decent rooms and an in-n-out across the street! along with the all night quick stop stores etc.....I'd much rather be there than riviera or stardust or harrahs, what dumps. |

Strat is nice enough, and so are the motels around Tropicana and Industrial, but both of them are so darned far from the center of the Strip. Whatever you save on the room you're gonna blow in cab fares or wind up walking your legs off to go anywhere.
The other problem with both those locations is that they can get a little creepy after dark, especially if you are on foot.
I agree with Harrah's being a toilet, but the Riveria isn't bad, and you're a less than a 10 minute walk to Caesar's and the Forum Shops, Bellagio, Wynn's new place, and just about everything else. |

| I have had good results for Vegas using this site called Biddingfortravel.com What they do is post the winning bids for Priceline hotel rooms, so you know what the bottom line is. They tell you what the best bidding strategy is. No bull, I got the Venetion for $75 a night mid-week. But as previous posters mentioned, if a big event is in town, hotel rooms are not discounted. |
