in the UK we had 'exercise cygnus' as recently as 2016 which evaluated how the uk would cope with a flu pandemic.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Cygnus

of course all these planning exercises stumble when it comes to how much it would cost to be prepared - set against the chance of a pandemic happening. or more accurately 'the chances of one happening during my term as prime minister/president'.

yeah, yesterday when it said "nothing serious, just for tests" I knew that was bullshit. No way the leader of a major country is being admitted to a hospital unless it's dire...

This will soon be the joke that lasts a lifetime. There will be nothing quick about any of this.

Everyone thinks that China got this and finished with it quickly. It's still flowing through their country. It started for them back in, what was it, November? 6 months and still going strong.

Well, If people don't stay home, it will last for ETERNITY, but I just got off WeChat with my Chinese peeps, and they tell me other wise, things are almost back to normal.

Normally I travel to China 3 times a year, but this year I skipped. I am making plans to go In October, unless things here don't get better. I may cancel altogether. Didn't Texas just get the stay home order like 3 days ago?

My friend who lives in Carrollton, Texas just told me most everyone is still doing business. WTF?

Texas hasn't issued a statewide shelter in place order, but many cities have voluntarily instituted one. Perhaps because Texans don't like leadership, doing the obvious thing isn't obvious to all.

I received a call from a โ€œtele-townhallโ€ from one of my senators that was doing a Q&A session. He explained to one individual that the loans that are available to businesses, if used for payroll for employees, will be considered a grant. If used for any other purpose, it will be a low interest loan. No matter what, Iโ€™m thinking that the business owners are fucked. Iโ€™m pretty sure that the government has already thought about all of those โ€œgreedyโ€ business owner trying to stuff their pockets with โ€œfreeโ€ cash.

right, because if they said otherwise it would be out to the back 40 and they'd have a bullet put in the back of their heads.

sorry but I don't believe it....and if it was true it just helps bolster the thought that they were better prepared for this (as in they created this and had a vaccine waiting in the wings)

I hope your contact(s) are truthful... but there is no way they mitigated this mess with the amount of people in their country.

IF you can believe this "map"

NY has more deaths than china? come on...

on the flip side I don't know if I trust the cause of death data either.

Probably didn't notice because Austin and Dallas have already had orders in place for weeks, and previously, Greg said he wasn't issuing a statewide order. Better late than never I guess?

Everything here is hear-say. It may all be lies unless we hear directly from the horses mouth. Anyone out there with first hand experience?

My first hand experience is, I was exposed to the virus. 3 weeks without symptoms. Lucky.
I closed my small non essential business. I will not take a loan or receive unemployment. My business insurance will not pay for lost income due to this shut down.
I am at home on lock down. My Wife is working at home. I walk the dogs and take a drive in the bug, or ride my bike. Keep busy around the house with yard work, cooking and cleaning.
If this is retirement , it sucks. Rather be at work. Spend a lot of time reading which leads to a nap. I even pulled out my old Nintendo to play some LOLO.
Can't go to the beach or the parks or the casino. I did find my bread machine, fresh bread every day. Its all a bit weird but it is all real.
What did you do today?

There are credible sources and incredible sources. A lot of credible sources are saying China is under-reporting numbers. Chinese sources, for various reasons, aren't very credible. But, let's be completely honest here - this is neither here nor there. The numbers of deaths will be spun for propaganda points. But this isn't a game, let's not get dragged into something so ghoulish and cynical.

same with everything there...that's the problem. to your point, what is the horses mouth and do we trust said horse? Laughing

awww...fuck...

I spoke with a friend who has a shop in JAX beach who is considering looking into the bailout money. he caters to the rich and famous, so it's business as usual for him.

spoke with a guy I use to work with. he was the "low man" and pretty much did oil changes, tires, brakes and misc "grunt work" he doesn't expect to go back to the shop we worked at anytime soon, if at all.

he's one of the rare Americans that actually saved his loot...brown bagged his lunch, saved his $$ and bought stuff outright with little to no financing. he's doing just fine, and may just retire early (he's 54 fwiw)

on the flip side another former coworker is on the verge of losing it all which is sad. he worked as a tech along side me and his wife is a teachers aide who isn't getting paid for any of the shutdown. He's got one kid in college, and 1 on the way.

a client of mine owns a restaurant who was doing take out (not usually his gig) and decided to fire sale his meat/produce sell the kegs, purge the lines and essentially kick the biz in neutral for now. thankfully he owns the building outright.

the problem with my area is summer makes us or breaks us. we live on the outskirts of a very touristy part of CT. it's eerie driving around...it's the way I remember it as a kid. zero traffic. crazy...

SECNAV just guaranteed that Captain Crozier discipline won't go any further with his really stupid diatribe. He also just ended his career. Out before end of April (or sent to inspect Navy installations at Tierra del Fuego, figuratively)

I never really went to church, I was just a bit different I go around from one place to another living in my Aircooled T25, mainly in france I see stuff that others don't see,I help protect families from Evil things that I don't have time for, I've seen weird stuff you may never believe in a life time , but what I can say is that there is a light of energy of love that is there for you all its there all the time, it just gets clouded by fear of the unknown, I am nobody I was just given a latern of light to carry with me to remind others you are never alone, in times of darkness they are always there with you.

Well I guess that's how you define "recovery". He went from being 100% healthy and being exposed to slowly worsening at home for 1 week until hospitalized. Then another week fighting intubation. Then a week on a ventilator. Then being discharge on home O2 3 (or maybe 4) days after being extubated.

He can barely walk to the bathroom alone. He has been told he will need supplemental O2 at home for at least 8 weeks because his lungs are so damaged. He has lost a lot of muscle mass and will need physical therapy to gain any level of endurance.

I bet it takes him 4-6 months to get back close to being normal.

and as a reminder....he was a very healthy 55 year old-ish guy with a wife and two kids and a very professional job (He has a white Aventador Cool )
