I was able to surface mount my control panel behind the drivers seat. I didn't want to cut up the stock cabinetry. There's more depth there than you think.

If I could surface-mount, it would sure simplify things since I've learned that nobody makes a flush-mount non-metallic NEMA enclosure... But, I have an idea to use threaded standoffs, some OE rubber cabinet trip, and this enclosure (if I can convince myself it is spacious enough): https://www.polycase.com/ml-70f

I too am reluctant to hack an 8x10" hole in stock cabinetry... but my thought process includes:
- If I surface-mount the bare components, then future design changes result in swiss-cheesing the cabinetry with mounting holes. Which is worse... one big hole, or a multitude of small holes.
- If I surface-mount the enclosure, I'm concerned that there's enough space behind the driver's seat (I am 6'4" and seat is always all the way back), or even if (to your point) there is, that my battery monitor wouldn't be so visible.
- I like the idea of these electrical components being enclosed, whether they are outside of cabinetry (because I have dogs that shed, and drive on dusty roads) or inside of a cabinet (protection from stored items, errant fingers, leaky sink drain, etc).
