Thanks Everett! It’s an odd thread, not quite sure where to place the pics. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Yes, karmen played a huge role in the design of mercedes early cars up until the 60s. I just saw one in one of my books. I'll get back on to what it was. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, cam, heads, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

That car was a concept/prototype, yes?
I can't see any manufacturer actually building and selling a car that has such a piss-poor excuse for an entry door.
"Entry hatch" would be more appropriate for that one.
The nose is very Karmann Ghia like, though - only with a single large grill in the center. |

I'm not sure exactly how many of these particular cars were designed by ghia and for some reason I cant find the part in the text stating which is made by which l. I will read some more tonight and continue the hunt. But, here are some photos of mercedes that resemble karmen ghias body lines,

I happened upon this cover photo for a vintage issue of Motor Trend magazine ...
... and noticed the 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America.
Apparently the coachwork was done by Pinin Farina, but I think there are some clear similarities to the Karmann Ghia design. |

I had a '59 Plymouth that was often mistaken for a Karmann Ghia. |

I believe the Volkswagen do Brasil made SP2 model has been mentioned here as a possible "replacement" for the Karmann Ghia.
While the design of the SP2 does not seem to have any obvious direct visual connection to the Karmann Ghia, they both share the notion of a "sporty" car (as opposed to a true "sports" car).
While browsing through the Samba Classifieds this morning, I noticed an ad for a beautiful SP2 for sale.
If the seller's verbage in the description is accurate, then apparently there is a much more direct connection between the SP2 and the Karmann Ghia than I was previously aware ...

The SP2 you see in the photos is one of the last manufactured by VW. In addition to being a 1976, the chassis numbering attests to this fact, BL (....). It has been completely restored, and the painting is in excellent condition. No ripples, dents or scratches. Excellent car to drive.
According to Quatro Rodas magazine number 731, March / 2020: “The production involved an expensive and complex logistic shuttle: the steel plates were stamped at VW and then traveled 4Km to the Karmann-Ghia factory to frame the bodies. The painting was carried out at VW, the final assembly at Karmann and the final quality control at a last stop at VW. Its quality of construction was really impressive, highlighted by the good level of internal finish and the sport seats covered with leather (with head restraints that the modern Passat would forget to present two years later). Console between the seats, reading lights for maps, handle for the passenger, ammeter and thermometer were exclusive items that differentiated from SP1. The SP2 platform was the Variant wagon table. Its unprecedented engine had a resized lubrication circuit, pistons with 88 mm in diameter to raise the cylinder capacity to 1.7 liters and a slight increase in the compression ratio (from 7.2: 1 to 7.5: 1). All to yield a quiet 75hp at 5,000rpm. The torque 13 mkgf at 3,400 rpm, evidenced by the elongated differential ratio from 4.21: to 3.87: 1. The SP2 weighed almost 200Kg more than a Puma GTE, From 0-100Km / h in 17.4 seconds.
... |
I assume that the author is referring to the Brazillian Karmann Ghia factory, so I suppose that it's really more of a "second hand smoke" type of relation between the SP2 and the Karmann Ghia, ... but even that is more than I was previously aware of. |
