This. Exact same thing happened to me. Clerk failed to provide pic of my provided sticker. Same, i didnt want to stick it on permanent. Of course this required 2 visits to the DMV. |
I always just use a loop of scotch tape to attach the tag so I can remove it later. Worked for 3 separate YOM plates I've done over the years. |
Damn, where were you eight months ago???
Actually, some double-backed tape crossed my mind, but I didn't want to risk the embarrasment of getting caught at the counter.
Also, I wanted to correct an inaccuracy that I stated (which you guys probably already noticed): they don't give you the metal tabs when you leave the DMV, they send them in the mail along with the new tags once your request is granted. |

FYI- CA DMV is now accepting walk-ins for YOM. I tried to get my YOM registered to my bus since May, and I was having no luck until about two weeks ago.
They told me that due to COVID, it will take at least two months before I get the new registration paperwork showing the plates registered to the bus.
|
Follow Up: 2 months to the date, I finally got my new registration with the YOM plates registered to my bus. _________________

I just came across this thread. About 5 years ago I purchased a BEAUTIFUL set of Yellow plates black lettering that I was told were clear. 3rd DMV try finally found a clerk that had a clue what was what. One had accused me of some illegal plot although she wasn't sure what crime I committed.
A couple months after all was in I got a call from the woman that ran the program. She explained that my plates had been registered at one time to a 62 Chevy so I couldn't use them since I had a 59 VW. She said it made no sense but that was how the law had been written, can't swap years. I don't remember if she said make. She was very nice.
That's my experience.
The seller did give my money back, luckily I knew someone that knew him... |

^^^ That makes sense, in 2013 I bought a (now sold) 1948 Chevy Fleetline, and promptly went to a Good Guys hot-rod show to seek the proper yellow plates with fat black lettering. I found the guy selling plates, and they were all sorted by "year" (I don't know if it was "model year" or what), and he reminded me when I was paying for them that they would be for a '48 vehicle. That must've been why. |

I actually had a set of old plates that I successfully registered to my bus at the time (under the YOM program) and then a year later they contacted me and said my plates were duplicates and I'd have to stop using them. I have the plates still and they are definitely not repros (steel stamped plates) so I'm guessing someone made a copy and then successfully registered those. Not sure how I was also able to register and run them for a year but it's the DMV so anything is possible.
In the end I had to buy another set of plates and register them to my bus. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

We sold our ‘65 Bus to a guy in California 11 years ago. He registered it in CA with original black plates.
We bought it back last Summer. Since I’m not in CA, they are now wall hangers.
He suggested that original black plates aren’t so valuable since California reissued the black plate.
I didn’t realize the huge PITA It is to get original YOM plates on a car in CA.

The “reissued “ California black plates are quite different from the originals. _________________ Jack Staggs

The new plates are no substitute for originals as other than color they don’t look the same. Originals didn’t drop in value.
Your plates have value to someone with a 65. |

Agreed. I think the new plates actually increased the value of original plates and made the YOM program more valuable. I really hate seeing the new plates on new cars. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

They have re-used some of the number sequences for newer "boutique" places, like the college plates, whale plates, etc. For this reason, do not buy "DMV Clear" plates until you're ready to run down to DMV and register them - the sequence could get pulled out from under you. _________________ -Thom
