Morning, for some of us older timers and not so old we want to use the subbies for our camp mobiles. Climbing Yosemite with an over weight under powered camper makes for 50' motor homes wanting to send you over the cliff. We need more power and torque to get us over those hills. My 58' is stock and will remain the same. But my 72' Westy and its blow 1700 T2 is dead and randy out of comfort TX wants 4900.00 for a two liter. No doubt a good unit, but the price is out of my range and I do have the knowledge and tools to make the change. JMO, enjoy the holidays...........grump |

Yeah i think the biggest thing to remember is aircooled vw stuff is prohibitively expensive for most people now they are collector cars. Then you have to hope there's shops locally to assist if machine work or other non-bolt on operations need to happen. Additionally the top speed in the us isn't 55 anymore and the top speed of most of my aircooled cars was 60-68. Kinda hard to get anywhere on 70mph roads.
I actually just sold my restored 68 beetle for that reason.
I know top speed is dictated by the transmission too but 0-60 with a stockish 1600 vs 0-60 with a stockish ej22 is night and day.
