LOL @ the JD Power pricing, get real!

I agree especially for the Northeast. Other than the price & steering wheel it looks pretty nice. Sure glad the RMV isn't using J.D. power values to tax us here. wow Rolling Eyes

Very ambitious on the pricing. Good luck getting it (I hope they do). And yes, I'm glad they aren't taxing us what JD thinks they are worth. Just because it's rare, doesn't mean it's desired. Wink

Don't be too hard on the JD Power/NADA prices. It is my understanding is that is a guide used to determine how much $$$ banks and dealers can loan on the car. It is the dealers's association that publishes it, right? Why the heck would anyone trust THEM to set real values?
"The National Automobile Dealers Association is an American trade organization representing nearly 16,500 franchised new car and truck dealerships, both domestic and foreign."
I do know Vermont uses NADA guide prices to set registration rates, so some places will tax you via the NADA BS, but here in Ohio the only power the NADA has is the dealers might lend $28k to some CRAZY person to buy a SB. Can you imagine that car??

Yeah, the NADA guides are off as well. According to it, the 70 Square in my backyard would sell for 13 K. I don't think so. Maybe with a ton of work, and a couple of grand in the glove box it might. Laughing

So taking away the fact that this is a late square - T3's in general are selling between 20 to 30k regularly. Mostly early examples. T34's have reached heights that most - if their whining and attitude of 1980 pricing is true - cant afford. Its no longer a matter of when gentlemen, its here now and has been for awhile. I just sold my freshly restored 1974 hard top Westfalia at NADA - Blue Book pricing. Took about a month to do so. The average VW dude you were 25 years ago isn't buying them either. Its a whole new crowd, with money, ready to enjoy some of the stories you've been telling for the past 30 years. Wink Laughing

I have never sold any of my cars for at or below supposed market value. Always higher and either at what I want or slightly below. Same with parts. Those suckers a little investments waiting to happen. Im not special, there are plenty of others doing this as well.

Unmolested 66 red square sold in 2011 for $9600 and people were complaining it was a high price. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I can't fault anyone or call them greedy for getting top $$ for their vehicle, nor can I call them cheap for thinking they can find a good deal out there. I don't think type 3's are "regularly" selling for 20K plus but exceptional ones yes.

BAT is the high water mark for most sales IMO

anyways I still think the 73 square on CL in NY is way overpriced

Four lug hubcaps are the most common ones out there. All four lug VW's all used the same one for many years if Im not mistaken? I think the 1966 T3 nipple cap is the only odd one? Dont look in the T3 parts only, there are so many four lug cap ads.

These are not Type 3 wires, lacking the right angle distributor connectors...

As rare as these cars are, as I own one, for $twenty five thousand US Dollars, I would expect NOS or at least New repro lenses.

disagree. not all type 3's had the right angle wires, early ones didnt. they aren't for 68- like the ad states. These were on my notch. I have an NOS set sitting here that are not right angled

I have to admit, I haven't read all 500 pages of this thread, but...

The glove box latch broke on my '73 Squareback, Smiley.

I put a new one in, it didn't fit right. The spring-loaded angled plastic catch was too long and it wouldn't unlatch when I closed the glove box lid. Then the latch exploded. After three days.

I took it back to my local VW parts store, they gave me a new one. I Dremeled down the plastic latch a bit so that it still latched, but I could open the lid back up. Even so, the metal body of the latch was hitting the metal frame above, and sticking a little, causing resistance when I opened or closed the lid. Then the new latch exploded, after ONE day.

I cut the new latch in half, tapped and screwed the knob side to the lid, and superglued two of those super-strong (neodymium) magnets that you get from Home Desperate to the frame. Works great. Doesn't pop open when driving.

I've read the extensive info on this website about the garbage TRW steering boxes.

I had an experience with a turn signal canceller that I just could not get to work, right out of the box. There was too much friction, it just wouldn't cancel...it was like the molded plastic parts were just too thick. I paid three times the price for an OEM one, and it works just fine. To this day.

What choice do we have? Why do I have to buy a new ignition switch (the electrical part) every two or three years? I would GLADLY pay three times as much to get one that works correctly, and LASTS.

Anyone out there with similar experiences?

Jep.. sadly this it the reality with aftermarket rubbish, had the same with inner and outer rocker panels.. holes were not aligning with the chassis and outer needed that much cutting and welding that in the end it would have been better to just make my own..
