Made some smaller brackets for the oil pump and filter bracket:

I'm thinking of re-enforcing the stock tranny stock mount. The so called HD mounts I have held in my hands are all terrible quality for material, fit and welds. Rolling Eyes

What do you guys think? Where will an original mount give with very strong engines? What area needs some beef-up? Anyone any actual experiences?

BTW cardboard will be welded steel Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks and Cheers

I used to have( still do somewhere) a 12 volt oil transfer gearotor oil pump for outboard yamaha engines to transfer the oil from the big tank to the engine mounted small tank.I was going to use it for either a prelube pump befor start up instead of a accusump or for a trans oil pump like you are doing. I almost did my vw trans for it but couldn't find it among all my "stuff", I thought about making a scoop to catch the throw off from the ring gear to send forward but didnt do that either.... after it was all done and installed I did a good amount of driving and 3 gear lube changes after a hour of playfull driving the trans was warm...just warm. it was a lot cooler than I thought. witch made me rethink some of the clearances I put in it as far as case growth end to end and the pinion thrust bearing I put in it, I probably put it in too tight due to the dam little heat the case was witch means the case wasent growing half as much as I thought it would. oh well it worked fine for 3 years till I sold the car and havent heard anything from the tickled shittless buyer.

Hi Mark, how much power did you send through the gears, for how long of a time? I have a relative brave 2,1 with a ,88 forth in my bug. If I am driving it at 110 mph for only a short time on a flat, the tranny gets so hot you can not touch it! That is still true after a short drive from the highway to home.

We had this discussion here and I like to protect my B5 with a filter and additional oiling. The cooling comes as a bonus if needed Cool

Cheers
Lars

Found some time today and build/modified a pre filter for the scavange side of the pump. I replaced the sinter filter with a mesh filter and added a very strong magnet.

Ray, this is a Setrab Slim-Line oil cooler. Probably too small to cool the engine, but should do for the tranny.

Cheers halbug

This sway bar is part of the Mendeola rear axle kit. Not sure it will fit original trailing arms?

Ok thanks for the information. Do you plan on putting a scoop around the cooler the scoop could double as protection.

I did consider a scoop first, but decided against it. First pic shows that the cooler sits less than 1/2 inch below the pan and somewhat protected by the sway bar. Second pic shows the area is pretty open once the air gets past the lowest point of the pan. I'll test this set up first.

It looks like the Sway-away bar just mounted with different weld-on mounting brackets. I have one listed for sale. Does your sway bar has a number stamped on it? I can look at mine to check for the number.

The weld on brackets became necessary to fit the bar to a thing chassis with a truss bar still maintaining the intended location. Sorry no number on the sway bar... But agree, looks very much like the SAW.

[quote="halbug"]Based on some Porsche racing transmissions I have seen, I like the idea to return the cooled oil through jets directly onto the gears - at least some of the oil...

To make sure I have constant pressure and therefore even supply to all those points, I designed a distributor block with build-in pressure regulator. Anything past 10-14psi (adjustable with washers) will return directly into the case, through the oil filler hole.

And yes, it is a fuel injection rail profile Cool

Very nice!
Is that just a spring loaded ball check valve inside?

Thank you Ray, yes exactly, a spring loaded check valve to hold a constant oil pressure on the oil nozzles and protect the pump from too much back pressure.

Cheers Lars
