hi yall. new to sound systems but once body work is done on my 65 its interior time and a good sound system is mandatory.
what size subs are yall running in your cars? my car is a T1 and i was thinking of running 2 seperate subs behined the rear seat ontop of the luggage tray. i was thinking separate so i could push the two towards the side of the car( left and right) and have a little space in the center for my efi electronics. the cant go under the rear seat because my oil tank for dry sump is going there. im also looking at making my own sub boxes, do id only need the subs themselves.
i was looking at some of the alpine and monsoon products and for what they are the prices are decent.
ive got the upgraded monsoon system with amp and an aftermarket head unit in my 16 year old volkswagen and it sounds decent.
obviously the trunk sounds like the best placement for the amp in a beetle.
how many speakers are yall running in your beetles? i want to put one on each door but will this make the speakers sound bad sense the doors are so shallow? what about tweeters? my current speakers are temporary. they are 3 ways but im not sure if additional tweeters would help.
my head unit is a retro sound stage 2 or whatever. nothing insane but for what it is its actually not that bad, build quality is decent as well.
i would like not to have to use the plastic kick out that go by your feet they sell because A. theyre plastic, and B. i hate not having enough leg room.
i wasnt sure where to post this, but if we had an electrical sub forum it could go there.
also, what are yall running for altenators?

In my '67 I ran ten speakers.
2 10" woofers behind the back seat in MDF custom ported box, removed back seat panel
2 6x9 3 ways on a solid oak shelf behind back seat on top of woofers
4 6" dual cone round speakers on rear quarter panel, ringed with a 3/4" oak to pull away from body
2 4" round on the front kick panels
250 watt amplifier RMS, two crossovers, mounted in the trunk on a piece of particle board. Over 60' of 12 gauge speaker wire.
Fronts were on tweeter channel, rear 4 on mid range, woofers on sub. 6x9s direct to amp.
No pics...was 1989...had it installed for about a week for someone else drove the whole bug away. Start with an alarm system.
Current set up in the buggy:
2 6" woofers
2 small box 3 ways
2 6x9 under dash
2 tweeters
2 crossovers
200 watt marine amp
No alarm but live in Germany and have a garage.

I have a single 12" in a banpass box. Custom Fiberglass pods made in the car to sit as hi as possible in front corners of kick panels. 6 1/2 focal Power mids and tweeters with 6 channel Focal amp.
Take your time and do it right, rattles make a good system sound shitty.
everything controlled with a DSP by Audio control. Bluetooth or head unit. I use just the Bluetooth. It is tuned on a laptop.

yep, that's the way to do it, clean wiring and no rattles.
Take your time.
I spent a good 8 hours just running wires, speakers were already mounted-which was an undetermined amount of time in high school and college wood shop. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

Components in kick back panels, tube sub (bazooka etc) in package tray (I just say no to heavy ass sub boxes in VWs), amp in trunk.
I matted my truck but not my m3. My truck sounds way better. |

These are amazing and fit great, i used them rear deck lid speaker.
After I removed any thing that could hold moisture, like the headliner, carpeting and sound deadening in firewall etc. my car is so loud I could not hear the raid.
Sooo i you look were the radio was in the dash is row of toggle switches, ha.
IF you look real close you will see I put them in upside down, they day NO instead of ON. I screwed up. It grow on my.
Real VW Guys don't need a radio ( lying ) the engine makes music.
Still have the lump on the roof were the antenna went.

DIY Audio is my other main hobby
I have run a few different setups in my cars. My personal favorite is running kick panels upfront with 6.5" full range drivers, A rear package tray speaker shelf with a pair of 6.5" drivers, and a pair of 8-10" subs, run on separate channels. Cross your mains at 100-180hz or so depending on the driver you choose. I like sealed or bandpass boxes for subs.
Run all your audio ASP/DSP and amplifiers all at one central location- it makes routing everything easier to do cleanly.
The absolute biggest recommendation I have is to choose drivers with high dB/W efficiency, this will make a difference on how much power they need to reach a decent volume. I don't listen at super loud volume, but I like it to be reasonably loud on the freeway to drown out road noise, loud enough to not be able to talk over without yelling.
In my 71 super I ran Faital PRO 6FE200 as my four mains, and I can't remember the exact Dayton 10" subs I used. I used a pair of Dayton AMT tweeters in the corners of the dash. I tuned the levels with a Dayton measurement microphone, based off of the controls on the Pioneer unit I used. For the crossover I used my own design based on a linkwitz-riley 24Db/ octave 3-way crossover, built with individual opamps I used a few different amplifier combinations, but like class-D types best for how compact they are.

In my 73 Super I am going to be rebuilding the system once I'm back to driving it again. Ok, I've read all yalls post. First off, thanks. Theres some very helpful info. I appreciate it homies fo sho.
YDBP, I've been thinking about the security and alarm stuff lately. My school isn't in the best of hoods and a freshly painted car that's louder than every car on the parking lot and $1k worth the sound equipment is east bait imo. I've been thinking about dead bolts and sensors but I haven't done much research yet. Thanks
Ivngkings, you sub box looks craze E! I like imma make one like yours. Do you happen to have an pics of the the kick panels before they were installed? I was against the ones you can buy off the shelf but with them up high not only do they look bad ass but they look like they save precious space.
Dauz, I was thinking about bazooka tubes but I wanted to see if I can get away making my sub box relatively light considering the luggage tray is at a higher center of gravity. The next engine i building should make around 180-190whp. So the car won't be struggling.
I hear yall about sound deadening and all. Its a mandatory for me. I obviously won't be buying dynamic mat but ill use something close. Inside the doors, entire floor, fire walls, etc. I want to be able to compete with the cummins in the parking lot lol. Who said bugs can't be loud?
Nextgen, where did you get your kick outs?
Lingdingwell, I had to look up some of the terms you used. I don't know much of anything about acoustics yet. I swear there must be a trillion brands of car audio equipment lol.
For some reason I'm drawn to the alpine stuff. I think its just because I like the name and also because bmw made the alpine edition cars
What would you recommend for high mid range quality subs and speakers?
I listen to my music loud. I know its bad for me but its not something I do everyday. Especially not with ear buds. I want this shit to go boom. I don't care If I become that obnoxious guy with the big subs lol.
For the luggage tray location, if I use all the box space possible, will two 10s fit and have enough box volume?
I listen to 90s-now rap and hiphop and 90s- 2000s rock and punk. I'll probably be forced to listen to country when my girl friend takes control of the radio lol.
Is there such thing as gangster rap specific subs? What specs would I be looking for? Lots if travel if thats the right term?
BTW, I'm picky with my rap, I got so sick and tired of all the rap songs that talk about sex and drugs I've completely redone my Playlist. Kanyes gospel records are pretty good too.
My car has pop outs. Should I be concerned with flex when they are open?
Also, whats that auto safe wiring your supposed to use? Isn't it like silicon wire or something?

lingdingwell, is your jetta double din? not that i matters if it is or isnt but in my passat, i replaced the monsoon stereo with a china touch screen unit. it comes with outputs for subs already on the harness. although warning, it was a PITA to get all the speakers and tweeters to work with the factory amp. not all the wiring matches the factory harness.
i looked at the faital speakers and their stuff looks decent and price is good as well. for the 6 in units, i see different sub models like the 200 you mentioned. the biggest difference seems to be the frequency range. what am i looking for in regards to frequency? frequency is like bass and mids and treble right? so does a broad range make the speaker slower? what happens if i use two with a scale on the high end and two with a scale on the low end?
sorry about the newb questions, ill probably look back at this one day and be like how did i know such little of sound lol.

Alpine edition BMW? do you mean Alpina? that's not even close to the same
you can fit 2 12's behind the back seat, I did in the 90's, no problems there. I kept my amps under the seats. 5 1/4's in the kick panels using the fiberglass panels. I like this back deck they offer https://www.glass-action.com/index.php/products-mobile/Speaker-Panels-c15451062
realistically, you can use 1 12 in the back, it's only 3db less to have 1 than 2 with the same wattage (every sub with the same wattage adds 3db)
A simple 3 way amp, 2 5 1/4 and one 12 will be very loud in a bug on the cheap |
