Wondering what size everyone has in their garage??? I'm looking at purchasing a larger size but don't want overkill. Also, looking to run a sander, grinder, sand blaster...Thanks |

I'm sure someone else can help you better than me with all the #'s but Don't be fooled by the big ass tanks because that does not mean anything if the motor can't keep it full, Especially with DA sanders that use tons of air. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

| Craftsman 6hp w/120gallon tank. I like Bill May's setup better though. The motor is never on, and when it is.....it's quite |

san blasters suck air, the craftsman ones with like 30gal tank will do but you have to keep waiting for them to catch up, and they are noisey mothers. _________________

I don't think there is such a thing as overkill. In this case bigger is almost always better. When I say big I mean capable not just a bigger tank which is an excellent point made by someone earlier in the thread.
I've gone through 3 compressors now each one bigger/better than the one before. Once you have one you'll find more reasons to use it and buy more tools that require more air.
I have a sand blasting cabinet, portable pot style sand blaster, and a da sander that all draw serious continuous air. The compressor I just got rid of could only blast with full pressure for 3 minutes. That compressor was a 5hp single stage with a 60gal tank and it would kick back in after a minute of sand blasting or sanding but couldn't keep up with either even if it ran continuously. The smaller units will have to work extra hard which shortens their life span anyway. Save up and buy big. I wish I had of. I've spent/wasted more money in buying/upgrading three than just buying a good one in the first place. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

6hp -2 stage - 33 gal. - 15 scfm @ 40 PSI, 11.5 scfm @ 90 PSI
If you can, get a 220 volt. They only use 1/2 the electricity that a 110 volt does, and will last longer. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

i am using this one (bought a blemished unit for $330 shipped):
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=3848
it is very loud, and is always running, but it keeps up with all my tools (HVLP spray gun, low CFM DA sander, grinders) - i think it is a great value if you can find it discounted (however, I think it is overpriced at the price listed on that ad above)...
I am not sure why their website says 3.5 HP rated when the electric motor says 5 HP on the unit itself (maybe it 5HP unrated, 3.5 HP rated?) - if you can find one on discount, I think they are a great value and you can't beat Harbor Freight's $7 delevired to your door shipping cost for something this big... _________________ Wish List:

this is the true word... don't be fooled by such things as 155psi max pressure or anything like it. Air tools run on a specific amount of air volumn at a specific pressure. do your homework.
BTW, I use a 12scfm @ 90psi. _________________ '65 Karmann Ghia 'vert

I have a 15hp "Ecoair" with a 75 gallon reciever. The unit is a rotary screw and provides some serious air power, 17.5 cfm at 150psi
It really is a bit of overkill but I used to work for the company and got a superb deal.

Glad to see that you sell them John. I've been thinking about one for awhile. One question I have about them though. Will they work with a Type 3 pancake engine, or do I have to convert it to upright? _________________

Mine is 220 volt, 33 gallon, 12cfm at 40, 10cfm at 90, 5 hp.
Small enough to fit under the bench, yet good power. |

I have 2. The primary is an old (mid 80's) 10 HP, 120 gal. Its hard plumbed to the shop and lives in a little shed outside the shop. The second is a 10 hp gasoline powered, with about an 80 gallon tank. I got it very cheap, and use it for sandblasting and anything else that eats alot of air and is outside. _________________ The honey-do list put my project on hold....... |
